October 1st, 2018: the day my household grew by four little paws! Two years ago today I became a cat mom and adopted my cat from a local rescue. I don't know her exact birthday, but she is now about four years old. I am celebrating all things Delilah in today's post!
If you follow me on social media, Instagram Stories especially, you know that I have become an unashamed crazy cat lady. I am just obsessed with Delilah, and other cats as well. Although I had a cat growing up, I developed really bad cat allergies in high school and college, so I still think of it as a small miracle that my body seemed to cycle through those and now I don't have them anymore (more about that and how I got re-tested for allergies in this blog post!).
I loved Delilah before 2020, but this year has made me more thankful than ever that I have a pet. I'm sure some of you fellow pet owners feel the same! With all of the extra time at home and fear and uncertainties in the news, it has been the biggest blessing to have a cuddly and loving cat around. Delilah is also really funny, and her silly antics always add humor into being at home more.
In honor of her second Gotcha Day anniversary, I thought it would be fun to share my five favorite and least favorite things about Delilah, and I also have some of my favorite photos of her and us from the past year.
5 Favorite Things About Delilah:
- Her beautiful eyes - They are SO blue! Her eyes are what sold me on her when I first saw her. I don't know how someone could ever dream of saying no to them.
- Her facial expressions - Kind of going off on the theme of her eyes... most of the time she has this funny deer-in-the-headlights look. She always is wide eyed and looks like she's just been caught doing something. It is so funny! Her faces crack me up every day.
- How playful she is - Homegirl LOVES to play! She's still just as playful now at age four then when I adopted her at two. Her favorite toys are an old sock of my mom's that is filled with catnip, and any type of cat toy on a stick or string!
- Kitty kisses - Delilah loves grooming me, and other people as well! She gives kisses a lot more than my childhood cat did and it's so cute. If I pet her she always tries to kiss my hands. The only time it isn't so cute is when she licks my face in the middle of the night- ha!
- How friendly she is - Delilah is the least aggressive cat that I've ever seen. A lot of cats are also friendly, but when they're in a bad mood they can be a little aggressive, and hiss or bite. I kid you not- I have never once heard Delilah hiss! The only times she's ever scratched me is when we are playing and she does it accidentally.
- She's loud - I have never heard a cat as loud as mine. Occasionally she will meow quietly, but when she really wants something she goes "MMMEEEEOOOOWWWWWW" and doesn't stop! I kid you not, she's louder than a human yelling sometimes.
- She likes to wake me at all hours - Like most cats, Delilah is often up and about at all hours of the night. But instead of doing her own thing, she often likes to wake me up when she feels like it, bring toys in my bed and dump them on me, and she will lean down and meow in my ear to make sure I'm awake. Not exactly the ideal way to wake up in the middle of the night!
- Hairballs - This happens with all long-haired cats like her, but hairballs are never fun. Last night she woke me at 2am having one on the carpet of my room- ugh!
- Cuddling is on her terms - Delilah is super friendly and loves to be around people, but cuddling and holding her must always be on her terms only. She will meow really loud if you pick her up when she's not in the mood, and when I'm hanging out on the couch she prefers to be near the couch, but not usually right on me. Sometimes I wish she was a little more into cuddling with me all the time.
- Scratching my bed - I'm really lucky- Delilah has never once tried to scratch my living room couch and coffee table ottoman! She always keeps living room scratching to her cat tower. Unfortunately sometimes she does try to scratch my bed frame, since I have an upholstered bed. I'm not sure why the bed appeals to her when the couch doesn't- ah well!
Here's my post from last year for Delilah's first Gotcha Day anniversary! Thanks so much for reading, and for all the love you show Delilah on here and social media. And finally- a shameless plug that if you aren't a pet parent, adopting a rescue pet can truly change your life! I am partial to cats, but there are also so many dogs and small animals who need loving homes.
God Bless,
xoxo Annaliese
Awwww! Happy Gotcha Day to Delilah! I have noticed that my 2-year-old kitty only scratches furniture that has texture. He never claws the microfiber recliner, but he kept clawing the arms of the couch, which is not smooth, until I put large pieces of two-sided adhesive tape from amazon on the arms. Cats don’t like the stickiness of the tape, and now he no longer scratches the couch.
ReplyDeleteAwwww, love this post! We also have a baby boy cat turning 6 this year! He was a rescue cat and is the sweetest little fur-ball you can imagine. I can't imagine my life without him! :)
