#GirlBoss Outfit + 5 Blogging Truths I've Learned in 5 Years.

These hot pink pants were one of my favorite clearance rack finds this year! I found them in Montreal this summer at Zara, which is one of my favorite stores (and becoming one of my favorite ones to shop internationally!). They're such a bright and fun color, and have a unique style to them, so I knew I needed to add them to my closet. Fashion blogging doesn't always mean #basic! When I put together this outfit, all that I could think was the term "Girl Boss." Quite honestly this is a term that I think is a bit overused these days and I don't use much myself, but nothing else came to mind to describe this outfit! 😉

If I had a business casual job, this is the type of outfit that I would try to wear most days! When I interned for my broadcasting school last year, I had to wear business casual clothes to work, and I loved putting together fun and chic outfits like this. I hope that I might have a future radio job in a city where I can go to more blogging events and meetings, and have a chance to wear more cute dressier outfits for things that aren't my day job- haha!

Now to talk blogging! As some of y'all know, last week was my 5th blogiversary (!!). This year's blogiversary post was mostly focused on facts about me and general facts about the blog, not about blogging itself. Five years is a long time to consistently stick with doing something, and an especially long time to see a hobby go from being just a creative outlet to a second job! Anyways, while I would never claim to be an expert on blogging (I am still learning new things about the industry and running my blog every day!), there are a few things about blogging, branding, and personal image that I have picked up in the last five years, and I wanted to share those with you today! I know some of these things y'all might agree or disagree with me on, I'd love to hear your thoughts either way in the comments!

     1. Your blog is a sacred space - be very selective and careful about accepting guest posters. I receive inquiries for paid (and even more unpaid) guest posters and contributors for this blog all the time. Truth be told, probably on a daily basis! While I used to accept some of the paid ones back in the early days of SBIT, that is long over. With blogging for so long now, my blog is my sacred space. This is my creative venture that is all mine and I have built it to what it is! I wanted the voice on here to be uniquely mine. There is plenty of room on the world wide web for other voices and perspectives. People visit Southern Belle in Training because they want to hear my perspective on fashion, faith, travel and life, and that's a huge honor that I don't take lightly!! I would occasionally consider having a wonderful blogging friend guest post for me if a situation arose in my life that prevented me from blogging for a week or two... but other then that, my blog is my space for my writing and will remain that. (I actually am in the works right now of writing a very special blog post with a college friend of mine, but I think this is the first time in years someone else other than me has helped write a post!)

     2. Make friends with other bloggers! Can't stress this one enough! When I first started blogging during my freshman year of college, I remember thinking it would be so cool to make a good friend through the internet from blogging. I have certainly outdone my freshman year self's expectations by a lot! I have met some of the most hard-working, determined, beautiful inside and out women from the blogging community, and I'm blessed to call so many friends! Most cities across the country have blogging communities of some sort- if you live near any other bloggers, I encourage you to meet them and network! One of the things that I miss the most in Vermont are all the fun blogging events and my favorite ladies from Charlotte. I know though that many more blogging friendships will be in store in the future, and I'm trying to keep fostering the relationships that I have now!

      3. Prioritize photography. When I first received a DSLR camera from Christmas from my parents in 2014, I started taking blogging much more seriously that I had been. My new camera motivated me to post more regularly each week, do more fashion content, learn about photography, and through all of that, I was growing my social media following slowly but steadily and starting to get monthly sponsored opportunities! When I began working regularly with photographers on my blog, all of these things only increased. I follow some blogs that do use stock photography or iPhone photography exclusively, and great writing can be great writing, so photography isn't necessarily a do-all, end-all. However, blogs are a very visual medium, and most of my favorite blogs have stunning, original photography. Photography is a way that you can get very creative and tailored to the visions that you have for your brand, and I love having fun with it. I've been very lucky to work with some great photographers, and I also have fun still shooting some of my own non-fashion posts and iPhone pics for Instagram!

       4. Respond to emails and DMs in a timely manner. I'll be the first to say that I'm not always the best at doing this (especially since beginning working full time, and since up until recently I did work both Saturdays and Sundays at my day job), BUT it's something that I do strive to do and have since beginning my blog. If a brand or a reader takes that time to contact you, the least that you can do is take the time to send them a personal response (especially if it's a reader reaching out!). Sometimes I physically don't have the time in my workday to respond to a blog email, so I will send a quick one or two line response letting the person know that I did receive their message, am excited to respond, and will do so as soon as I have the time in my schedule later that week. I also try and respond quickly to Instagram DMs! I'm not as big of a fan of having long chats with readers via DM, so I often encourage them to email me if the conversation is getting longer, but I will still always respond.

      5. Don't be afraid to get personal... (but not TOO personal.) If you've been reading my blog or even following me on Instagram or Twitter for any length of time, you know that I'm not afraid to get personal with y'all! I love talking about fashion, beauty, and other more frivolous topics, but when it comes down it it, none of those things make me "me." If y'all are reading my blog, I also want y'all to get to know the real me, and make this a space where I can share my unique perspective and stories. I've written in the past about topics like how my faith impacts my views on dating apps, a painful falling out with a former high school best friend, and when my study abroad experience in college went wrong and how I felt unprepared for that- just to name a few! And these have often been the posts where I've gotten the highest page views and engagement. Of course- some topics in a person's life are not meant for the internet and to be shared on a fashion blog. Situations that deeply involve other people, situations of confidential nature, etc etc. But if there is a personal story in your life that you can share- do it!! You never know who it might touch.

I'd love to know your thoughts on what you think makes a Girl Boss outfit, and also on my five blogging truths! Share away in the comments. Wishing y'all a happy and productive Monday!

     God Bless,

xoxo Annaliese (or Charlotte XO on air!)

Late Summer PR Packages Review.

One of the best perks about blogging is the fun surprise PR packages that I receive from brands, and I love sharing reviews of the items with y'all! The last time that I did a post like this was in June, and it got a lot of great feedback, so I'm bringing back the PR package reviews today by sharing some of my favorite late summer beauty and haircare packages. Just a quick FYI for anyone who might be unfamiliar- PR packages are "gifts" sent to bloggers from brands- there is no sponsored obligation in myself or any other blogger sharing about these packages, so all reviews are 100% honest. 😊

This post contains affiliate links. Thank you for supporting Southern Belle in Training!

Avon has been sending me some fantastic blogger PR packages this summer! They recently launched a new cosmetics line called mark. by Avon, which is a youthful line with very chic packaging! The first mark. by Avon products that I tested are pictured above. They're the Touch and Glow Shimmer Cube palettes, in shades Coral Glow and Pearly Glow. Coral Glow is a blush palette, and Pearly Glow has great colors to use as a highlighter. I loved the packaging and presentation on these products!! The compacts themselves are so chic, and I love how the Shimmer Cubes really do look like cubes! 10/10 in the presentation department. However, I did find both of these to be a little bit hard and powdery and not as pigmented as I expected. They aren't the worst blush and highlighter (and I am still using/testing them), but not my all-time favorite either.

Avon also sent me their Big and Darling volume mascara to try, and I was pleasantly surprised by how much I LOVED this product!! I use three mascaras for everyday wear (let me know if you'd like to see a blog post sometime about my mascara routine!), and two of them are usually volume based. I've found a few volumizing mascaras that I'm pretty loyal to, but this one was fantastic and met all the criteria that I look for in a volumizing mascara: a plump and thick brush, a clumpy thickening formula (I like very bold lashes as opposed to a natural look), and long staying power. It retails for under $10 from Avon, so I might have to buy more for myself when this runs out!

Beauty subscription boxes are all the rage right now! I personally have never hopped on the trend, but Avon just launched their own subscription box called The A Box, and they sent me a box to review and sample from. The theme of the one I received was all things fall beauty, and I wanted to share what I thought of the Avon True Color Multi-Finish Eyeshadow Quad and the Avon True Color Glimmersticks eyeliner. I loved the gorgeous purple tones of both of these items and thought initially that they would be perfect additions to my fall makeup! After testing the Glimmersticks eyeliner, I thought it was a bit hard to apply and get a defined line with, so I think it would be a better product for lining my under eye with then my eyelid. But I will say I was impressed with the fact it lasted all day! The eyeshadow quad wasn't my favorite... I loved the pretty shadow colors, but found them to be chalky and not very pigmented.

Last Avon item for today's review! I've been getting really into using masks on my face in the past few months, so I was especially excited to try this. I was sent the Avon Anew Brightening Sheet Mask. This is a very wet sheet mask- so be sure if you try this to apply it over the bathroom sink. 😊 It's super moisturizing though, and feels very comfortable on your skin! I liked this mask and definitely want to try it again.

I have a pretty low maintenance, yet also very loyal haircare routine. About a year and a half ago, I wrote a blog post sharing my favorite shampoo, conditioner and hair styling products.... and pretty much nothing has changed since I wrote that post, haha! I'm much more likely to experiment with new makeup than I am shampoos. Anyways- Dove recently sent me a shampoo and conditioner duo from their Intensive Repair line, and I couldn't believe how much I liked these! They shampoos smell wonderfully, and leave my hair feeling clean and not at all greasy. I might definitely be repurchasing these when I want to alternate out from my beloved Suave shampoo!

Aveda also spoiled me with some new haircare products to try recently!! They sent a box of some of their new and old favorites, and quite honestly I haven't had a chance to try everything yet, so that's why I'm not reviewing it all! One item that I have been loving though is the Air Control light hold hairspray. This hairspray doesn't have the "crunchy" feeling at all, and is perfect when you need just a touch of hairspray to set a style, but not a heavy spray. It also has a nice scent!

Last beauty item for today's post!! Vaseline has sent me some nice PR gifts of their products this year, and the latest one featured this little Intensive Care Aloe Soothe lotion. I don't wear a lot of lotion in the warmer months, but I'm sure this will come in handy this winter when skin can get very dry!

And finally- a couple adorable home items! I recently received the most adorable box of goodies from Pier One. One of my favorite things in the box was a cute little animal plate, and they also included a gift card, so I went to my local Pier One here in Vermont and picked out another one (which had a Boston Terrier on it of course, my favorite type of dog!). These plates will make meals in my kitchen so fun to eat- now I just need to have a friend over for dinner so I can use both! 😊

Thanks so much for reading today's post! I love hearing your feedback- so please let me know if you enjoy reading these PR package review posts!

Does anyone have any fun plans for the weekend? Tonight I am babysitting for one of my coworkers... I was a babysitter and after-school nanny for three years in college (and part of last year also!), so I still enjoy babysitting from time to time when I have a free weekend night here in Vermont! Brings back some precious college and Charlotte memories.

     God Bless,

xoxo Annaliese (or Charlotte XO on the radio!)

My 5th Blogiversary + 23rd Birthday!

Happy 5th Birthday Southern Belle in Training!!! And happy 23rd birthday to me!! (Yes- I really did start this blog on my 18th birthday - haha!) Ahhh- I have been waiting to share this photos and this post with y'all for some time now, so excited to finally do so today.

To celebrate- I wanted to share 23 different lists of five - since I'm turning 23 and the blog is turning 5! I thought it would be a fun twist on a "get to know me" post. Some of the lists are blogging related, some are personal, and some are just fun! This post doesn't dig too deeply into blogging lessons I've learned in five years or blogging tips... but please feel free to leave a comment or reach out to me if these are posts that you'd like to see this fall!

For an outfit to celebrate five years of blogging, I knew I wanted something that screamed "Southern Belle." Even though I don't currently live in the south, when I started my blog as a freshman in college, I was so infatuated with traditional southern fashion and culture, and I still am! This Lauren James Seersucker dress and matching headband seemed perfect to me! The complete outfit is linked at the bottom of the post.

11. As promised....five of the worst dates I've ever been on:
  1. A first date for pizza with someone from Tinder, who upon finding out that I wanted to work in radio... criticized my career aspirations and asked bluntly "Why I didn't want to work in sports PR?"
  2. A coffee date with someone from Bumble on a day when I was going through one of the most painful things that I've ever dealt with in my personal life. Should have cancelled the date, felt bad to cancel last minute.... date not surprisingly did not go well.
  3. A movie date in high school gone AWKWARD. Will leave at that.
  4. Coming in as a tie for my two worst dates ever.... the first would be during my freshman year of college when I was attending first university. I was invited on a double date by a guy who was roommates with the boyfriend of the girl who at the time was my best friend. I had been hanging out with him for a few weeks. We went bowling and to see a midnight movie premiere. He wanted NOTHING to do with me during the movie, and pushed my head off his shoulder when I tried to cozy up. The next day, the guy sent his roommate (my friend's boyfriend) over to my room... to end things with me! He couldn't even do it himself! Sooo embarrassing and awkward.
  5. The second worst date ever would be a date in Vermont shortly after I moved here (a set-up by a coworker)... where the guy talked a lot about planning his roommate's Bachelor party, and asked me if I had any strip club recommendations in New England. He also told me several times that he "hated all radio."

  4. Mall trips over the years with Jess, my Big Diamond sister, and one of my best shopping buddies while I was in college. (Usually Hilary Duff was blasted in the car during these outings!)
  5. My senior year Black Diamond Formal

13. Five of my regular orders from various fast food establishments (don't look to me if you're a health nut):
  1. McDonald's (Rarely go here, but it's one of the few fast food restaurants and the only one on this list in Vermont): plain cheeseburger, small fries, and an apple pie.
  2. Chick Fil A: BREAKFAST is the best meal there... and I alternate between the Chicken Biscuit (RIP to the Spicy Chicken Biscuit) and the four count Chicken Minis. I always ask for fries instead of hashbrowns- most locations will make them for you during breakfast hours! And finish it off with a French Vanilla iced coffee. On rough mornings in college, sometimes I would get both the minis and the biscuit.....
  3. Bojangles: one plain biscuit and one small order of fries. #health
  4. Dairy Queen: a small sundae with chocolate ice cream, marshmallow and chopped nuts OR a small sundae with twist ice cream, marshmallow and rainbow sprinkles OR a cookie dough blizzard OR a chocolate malt shake. DQ has a plethora of delicious options!
  5. Steak n' Shake: plain cheeseburger or plain hotdog, fries with parmesan garlic seasoning added, and a chocolate malt shake. If it's a drive-through run, just the chocolate malt shake.

  3. My David Yurman crossover ring (there is a special story behind this purchase also).

  5. My first Kate Spade wallet (which I saved up for with babysitting money in college!).

15. Five of the most popular blog posts of all time on Southern Belle in Training (in order):

16. Five of my personal favorite posts on Southern Belle in Training (no particular order):

  1. Sparkling into 2017. (December 2016 - Sharing a bit about the most painful situation of my life to date.)
  2. OOTD: Minty Maxi. (July 2014 - one of my earliest fashion collabs and still a favorite to look back on!)
  3. My Color of the Year. (May 2016 - This was my first post working with Deeana from Deeana Kourtney Photography, and it really began a new chapter in blogging for me!)
  4. An Open Letter to My Ex-Best Friend. (May 2015 - This had been on my heart to write since I started blogging way back in 2012. So glad I finally wrote this post. Sometimes high school wounds are very hard to get over.)
  5. BIG NEWS: I Have a Radio Job + I'm Moving!!! (March 2017 - This was a secret I had to keep for several weeks as the details were being worked out with my new job in Vermont, so it was such a joy to finally share this news!)

19. Five things I'm most proud of myself for:
  1. Not losing my Christian faith in college.
  2. My credit score.
  3. Paying my own way loan-free through broadcasting school, and working two jobs while in broadcasting school (and blogging!) to help with that.
  4. Sticking it out and not leaving my study abroad experience in France (summer 2015) early, even though a lot of things kept going wrong.
  5. Taking a huge leap of faith and moving to Vermont to follow my dream career.

20. Five personal bucket list items I hope to accomplish in the next five years:
  1. Become a "mom" to a rabbit, dog... or BOTH!
  2. Run a 5k
  3. Be a maid of honor
  4. Bring a significant other on trips to both my homes: Maine and Charlotte
  5. Become a member of a church

21. Five powerful women who are a few of my role models:
  1. Nationally syndicated radio host Delilah
  2. Political commentator Tomi Lahren
  3. Pastor and author Heather Lindsey
  4. Actress Blake Lively
  5. Actress Beverley Mitchell

22. Five types of places I'm generally speaking always down to visit:
  1. Beach
  2. Botanical Garden
  3. Downtown of a city
  4. Mall
  5. Nail Salon

23. Five things I like about Vermont (I feel like I often complain about my new home... so best to end on a positive note!):
  1. The fact that delicious cheese and maple syrup are the two food products generally associated with the state. Yum and yum.
  2. The natural beauty of Lake Champlain.
  3. The proximity to Canada/Montreal.
  4. The local restaurants I've discovered.
  5. The fall season... which is only just beginning, but I've been told is pretty much the best in the country!

Thank you all for reading, and for making this the best five years ever!! I never would have dreamed that my little hobby outside of college classes would become a second job, my creative passion, the subject of my capstone project for graduation, a resume builder, a finder of many friendships, and truly one of my favorite things about my life right now.

Now I'm off to work to celebrate my 23rd birthday the best way that I know how- being ON-AIR! 😊

Labor Day Sales + Recent Purchases.

Happy Labor Day! I hope that it is a great Monday, whether you are working today or have the day off! Interestingly I am off work today, but I had to work both Saturday and Sunday this weekend (similar to my hours back from this spring/summer), so it isn't really a long weekend for me at all, since I only have Monday off. Ah, broadcast media life! Starting next weekend though, I have Sundays off instead of Mondays and I'm looking forward to that!

It's not too late to enjoy the best of Labor Day Weekend sales, so I'm rounding up some from my favorite retailers in today's post! This Wednesday is Southern Belle in Training's 5th Blogiversary (and my birthday!) so there will be a special post up instead of my weekly Midweek Ramblings + Recent Purchases + Current Wishlist post. So at the end of today's post I'm also sharing my recent purchases of the week!

And for my recent purchases of this week...

  • If you follow me on Instagram Stories, you know the funny story from the past few days with my newest pair of shoes! While at TJ Maxx, I found what I thought were the most darling embroidered flat mules. However, my mom is visiting this week and was shopping with me, and she was not into the shoes at all (she called them old lady slippers). We had a debate in the store about them, so I posted them on Instagram stories to hear y'all's opinions! I was so happy to hear most of y'all thought they were cute also, and that was able to convince my mom into getting them for me as birthday shoes! My exact pair isn't online, but this pair of mules is very similar and from the same shoe designer (and seems to be well in stock!)
  • My mom and I also stopped by one of her favorite stores, which has a location in the Burlington area. Quite honestly, this isn't a retailer that I've ever shopped at, but I was absolutely thrilled to find this super cute fall dress there! I am already envisioning styling it with my favorite riding boots and floppy hat.

Also- this is your last chance to enter the last two blogiversary giveaways on my Instagram! Winners have already been picked for the first few, but two of them are still open.

Have a great Labor Day! I can't wait to share my special blogiversary post with y'all on Wednesday!

End of Summer Style at Basin Harbor Club.

Hello September! Fall comes a bit earlier to Vermont since it's such a northern state, so it's time to kiss summer goodbye until 2018. This is one of my last favorite summer looks to share on the blog for the end of this season!

Keeping today's post of the shorter and sweeter variety! It is finally Friday and TGIF!! (Although I work Saturdays still so TGIS tomorrow...? Haha.) If you follow my Instagram, then you know that last week the main radio station that I work for, what was formally known as Planet 96.7, rebranded and relaunched as The New Hot 96.7! Relaunching a radio station is a huge effort, and my bosses pulled it all together in amazingly just a few weeks, so work has been quite crazy to say the least. I'll try and have a new Radio 101 post up for September sometime in a couple weeks!

Even though today is only September 1st, cooler weather has already returned to Vermont! This Labor Day Weekend I'll be switching out my summer to fall closet and also starting to decorate my apartment for fall. Sadly, that means it's time to put away pieces for the season like this cute romper!! I found this on clearance earlier in August and fell in love with it. It seems rare that I find something on a clearance rack that fits like a glove, but this did! Rompers can be hard to buy... I feel like so many of them are too skimpy and inappropriate to wear for most situations, but this one covered both my butt and chest (and was still cute!) so I knew I had to have it! It is unfortunately sold out online, but this one is similar and on sale and from the same retailer. I know I'll look back on these photos and smile in months to come when it is way too cold to even think about wearing a romper!

These pictures were taken by the lovely Amanda from Amanda Rose Photography! (She also shot the yellow dress outfit from this post.) I connected with Amanda through social media and was excited to shoot with her a few weeks ago! We met at the beautiful Basin Harbor Club lake resort in Vergennes, Vermont, which you can get a little taste of in these pictures. I was definitely nervous moving to Vermont about finding new blog photographers after having such a great relationship with Deeana, but I've been so lucky as to find not one, but two here!

Just wanted to give y'all a reminder as well to enter my blogiversary giveaways on Instagram! Southern Belle in Training turns FIVE next Wednesday (also my 23rd birthday)! There will be a special post that day to celebrate here on the blog, but all this week to get ready for that I've been hosting a different giveaway each night on my Instagram. They're all still open for entries and very easy to enter- you can do so here

Happy Labor Day Weekend! I'll try and update y'all on Sunday or Monday with the best long weekend sales! Also remember to keep the victims of Hurricane Harvey still in your thoughts and prayers, and donate if you haven't yet to relief efforts!

      God Bless,

xoxo Annaliese (or Charlotte XO on-air!)
