My 2023 Word of the Year.

I've been picking a Word of the Year for the past several years, and it's always fun to watch the year go by and see how that word played into my experiences, goals, and memories of those 12 months. For 2023, I actually struggled a little bit with picking one! But I finally did make a selection, and I'm excited to share it today.

A quick outfit note before I jump into my Word of the Year! This teal wool coat was one of my favorite Christmas gifts this year. I got it for 50% off on Black Friday! I had some money left on a gift card, and my mom covered the rest of it. I absolutely adore coats from this retailer. I have several in my closet that I love and have worn for years. This teal coat will be one that I treasure for years to come as well!

Joyful is my 2023 Word of the Year. There are a couple reasons why I picked this word! First and foremost, it became very clear to me in 2022 that the stage of life that I'm currently in is really, really special. And that stage seems to be continuing into 2023. I am more settled in my radio career than I was in my early 20s, and currently feeling very content and happy at my job. I love living in Virginia Beach and the Hampton Roads metro area, and I really see this as a long-term home. I am so blessed to be in good health and be active with my body. I have two great parents back home in Maine, and incredible friends all over the country. And I'm in the most loving and supportive romantic relationship. I don't take any of this for granted! I know that life is full of ups and downs, and there will be future seasons and years of life that have more lows than highs. While I am in such a sweet season, I want to be as joyful as I can, and appreciate all things big and small. There is so much to be grateful for and so many things to smile about!

I also wanted to pick this word because sometimes even when things are going well, I can get pessimistic. I think pessimism was a big coping mechanism for me in high school when I really struggled with anxiety (and some depression), and then from time to time it's kind of lingered a bit for me into adulthood. While I think I have become a much more positive person overall now in my late 20s than my teenage years, there's always still improvement and work to be done. My pessimistic side really came out in full force this past September when I had Covid during my birthday and had to cancel a bunch of plans. While that definitely was a bummer experience, it also probably wasn't the best decision to throw a weeklong pity party during my quarantine. Thinking back on this experience makes me really and to try to be more positive this year, and I'm glad that I picked joyful for 2023!

Cheers to trying to have a joyful outlook each and every day this year!

Most years when I share my Word of the Year, I also share my resolutions. To be honest with you, I really don't have many specific resolutions for this year! I'm very excited to keep making progress crossing off items on my 101 in 1001 list, but other than that I don't really have other goals. But there's plenty on that list to keep me busy! 😊
