MAINE TRAVEL GUIDE: Visiting the Kennebunks in the Winter.

     This is a post that is probably much overdue (as in, by several years) on Southern Belle in Training! It was my most recent trip home a few weeks ago that finally inspired me to write it, and I'm so glad that I finally was able to put something together.

     If you're a newer reader friend around the blog, let me fill you in a little bit. I've called North Carolina home since I moved here for college in Fall 2012, but whether I like to admit it or not- I'm a native Mainer! This is how my blog got its name- "Southern Belle" is for me living in NC now and having an affinity for all things Southern, and "in Training" comes from the fact that I'm from Maine. My parents and most of my mom's side of the family still live in Maine, as do my friends from high school.

     I'm from Kennebunk, Maine, which is a coastal town in the Southern part of the state. Kennebunk is often considered the same thing as Kennebunkport, which is a big New England tourist destination. Fun fact: they are actually two separate (but neighboring towns) towns! Kennebunkport is the bigger vacation destination, and has more of the hotels and bed and breakfasts. It's also the summer home to former President George Bush and his wife Barbara. Kennebunk is the more residential town, and something surprising is that more of the public beaches are located in Kennebunk as well! Although I'm from Kennebunk, I've spent my fair share of time in Kennebunkport as well. I worked in retail at a small store in Kennebunkport for the three summers that I went home in college. (I'm actually still close with many of my older coworkers from there!).

   In Summer 2015, the last full summer that I spent in Maine, I did a post series here on the blog called "Southern Belle in the 'Bunk." I took my outfit pictures over May and June of that summer at really unique and what I thought were naturally beautiful locations around my hometown, as a way to celebrate what where I'm from meant to me. Plus- it allowed me to get out of my comfort zone a bit in picking locations for blog photos! (You can find all of the posts by clicking the Southern Belle in the 'Bunk label on my blog's sidebar.) But surprisingly, I've never actually done an actual "travel guide" blog post for my hometown area.

     I realized in 2016 how many bloggers were taking vacations to the area that I call home. I had so much fun seeing Instagram photos and reading blog posts and recognizing all of the locations in different people's photos! It made me realize though that it was much overdue to write more about where I'm from, and not just shoot outfit photos there. ;-)

    While Maine is more traditionally thought of as a summer vacation destination, it can be a great place to take a little trip to if you're looking for a little taste of a New England winter experience. Without further ado, my travel guide:

{Dock Square Christmas Tree, Kennebunkport}

To Do:

My number one tip for visiting Maine in the winter season is below:

    Visit the Kennebunks during Christmas Prelude: Christmas Prelude is a special celebration that runs for two weekends each year in early December. All of the hotels, shops and restaurants in Kennebunkport all get completely decked out the celebrate the beginning of the holiday season, and it really is a magical time to be in the area! The main event is the lighting of the Dock Square tree (pictured above - it stays up into January). There is caroling in the streets with local choirs, special events open to the public at many of the hotels, and just a feeling of holiday magic throughout the town. I only made it home for Prelude once in my four years of college - usually my final exams ended too late in December for me to make it home. I wasn't able to make it this year either- but I'm hoping that I can in a future year soon!

And if you're interested in visiting Maine in other parts of the winter (of which you still have many months to choose from), here are some other activities:

     Walk on the beach: There is nothing quite like Maine beaches. While my heart will still always long for beaches with tropical ocean temperatures and palm trees, Maine beaches are truly one of a kind and I do love them as well. They're naturally beautiful and have a rugged feel to them, and very few of them are built up. Many are more rocky than sandy, but Southern Maine especially does have it's share of sandy beaches also.
In the summer, most of Maine's beaches have permitted parking, and they're also often overcrowded between both locals and tourists who are trying to make the most of the short summer season. Winter really is the time to enjoy the beach for all that it is! While it is way too cold for any sort of summer activities, there is really nothing like a long winter beach walk. And parking (at least in the Kennebunk beaches) is free from mid-September through I believe mid-June, so that definitely covers the winter months. My favorite beach Kennebunk beach is Gooches Beach, and my favorite Kennebunkport beach is Colony Beach. Both beaches have a rock jetty that visitors can walk out on - it's a great way to really experience the ocean and waves.

     Shop in Kennebunkport: Kennebunkport has the most charming area of little shops, called Dock Square. While the area certainly hits its peak in the summer months, most of the stores do stay open year round (or at least through Christmas Prelude - see above!). You can find just about anything in Kennebunkport: typical touristy items,  coffee shops, art galleries, jewelry and clothing stores, and plenty of made-in-Maine gift shops, with unique items that you won't find anywhere else! One of my favorite discount jewelry stores called The Best of Everything, which is kind of like a local version of Charming Charlie, is located just over the bridge from Dock Square on the Kennebunk side (there is a river and bridge separating the two towns). Some of the Dock Square stores do close during weekdays in the winter, but a good amount of them do stay open during weekday weekends, even into January and February.

     Cross Country Skiing at Harris Farms: This activity is actually located about 30 mins away from Kennebunk, but if you're in Maine when there is enough snow on the ground then I promise that this is something you won't regret trying your hand at! This was one of my favorite winter activities growing up, and I have so many fond memories of my mom and I going to do this each year. Sadly I haven't made it out to do this on any recent winter trips home to Maine, but I know it will happen again one of these years.
Harris Farms is dairy farm that's located in the nearby town of Dayton, and they offer cross country skiing (and ski rentals) all over their beautiful trails and acreage in the winter months. A lot of Mainers are big down-hill skiiers- my family and I aren't, but I do very much love cross country skiing. The trails and Harris Farms are so beautiful, and it's a great workout!

{The Kennebunkport Inn}

Stay:

     I have to preface this part of the travel guide by saying that I personally have never stayed at any of these hotels! Since I am from this area, I've never actually stayed at any of the hotels in the Kennebunks. But I have attended many functions at some of these hotels over the years,  eaten in their restaurants, and know people who work for them. And know people who have stayed at them! So hopefully that is almost as good? ;-)

     If you're visiting for Christmas Prelude: Kennebunkport's two largest hotels, The Colony and The Nonantum, are both great choices for visiting the area. They're both historic properties and have great restaurants. The Nonantum is located right on the river and is less than a mile from the ocean, and The Colony has ocean views. Both of high school proms were held at The Nonantum, and one of my cousin's weddings! And one of my best friends from Maine works for The Colony. Both of these hotels do close after the Christmas Prelude season though, so they aren't open for the whole season.

     If you're visiting later in the winter: I would recommend the Kennebunkport Inn (pictured above)! This beautiful and quaint inn is located right in the center of Dock Square, so it is in walking distance to most shopping and restaurants. They also have a great restaurant in the inn called One Dock. They're open year-round.

{Colony Beach in Kennebunkport}

Eat:

     Pedro's: This is my FAVORITE Mexican restaurant of all-time. I have yet to find better tacos than at Pedro's. I swear. You probably wouldn't expect to visit the coast of Maine and find great Mexican food, but I promise that it's here! Fun fact: Pedro's doesn't always have the best service. I've actually had to call and complain to their management before about some really bad service that I've had while eating there. Normally I don't return to restaurants where I receive bad service.... BUT THESE TACOS. Y'ALL. Order a large plate of Mexican Street tacos and you will not be disappointed.

     Federal Jack's: This is a restaurant and brewery, and it's a continued favorite spot for my high school friends to meet up at every now and then. They have a pretty extensive menu, and their restaurant is located right on the river, so the views aren't anything to complain about. In the summer their parking is a nightmare, but in the off-season it isn't usually that bad. They serve freshly brewed Shipyard beers, and one of my favorite beers of all time is a blueberry ale. I learned last year that you can actually find it at Trader Joe's stores nationwide- so sometimes I treat myself to that here in Charlotte for a little taste of home!

     Mornings in Paris: This is a little French bakery that opened in Kennebunk (very close to Kennebunkport) about four or five years ago. It's a great spot to meet up with friends at when I am home for visits now. The pastries are decent, but the best things to get there are beverages. They have several types of specialty coffee drinks and lattes, but my two favorites are the Mexican hot chocolate in the winter months, and the lavender iced tea in the summer months.

    And there you go! My guide to visiting my little neck of the (Northern) woods in the winter months. Have you visited Maine or the Kennebunks before? Are you planning any cold-weather winter vacations for this year?

Winter Style in Maine.

     Happy 2017 friends, and welcome back for my first post of the new year! I hope that y'all had a fun and safe NYE weekend. I had one of my best New Year's ever, and I can't wait to share much more about it in tomorrow's blog post.

     For today, I'm backtracking a bit back to my trip last week when I went home to Maine for Christmas! I had planned to share a travel guide post all about visiting my hometown in Southern Maine during the winter months- but I'm still working on that. It should be on the blog this Friday! Instead today I am sharing an outfit that I wore during my trip for a day of some last minute Christmas shopping at the shops in Kennebunkport with my dad, and a walk on the beach after. This was actually one of the warmest days that I was home- it was in the mid 40s when these photos were taken. Maine in the winter sure gives me a new appreciation for Charlotte winters- haha!

     This year more than ever before I am obsessed with peacoats and cute winter accessories. I had a lot of fun putting this outfit together, and building my look around this coat. I'm not usually a huge fan of wearing white in the winter, but by pairing the white beanie and leg warmers  with this fun ruffled top (which I also wore in this blog post), it was able to still keep the look winter appropriate.

     Hope that y'all are having a great start to the week! I'm excited for lots of fun posts coming up on the blog this week and this month. And in my personal life, I begin my off-campus radio internship through my broadcasting school tomorrow! This is an opportunity that I'm so very blessed to have, and have waited a long time for. I'll try and share some updates soon.

     xoxo Annaliese (new year = finally signing blog posts under my real name! ;-) )

Midweek Ramblings + Recent Purchases.

Via my Instagram @miss_alk {Follow me on Snapchat too with the same username!}

Ramblings:
  • Dreary weather: Charlotte has been just full of rain this fall! I don't mind the occasionally rainy day, but all of these clouds and raindrops are starting to get me down a little bit! Back in September, it rained for a full two weeks in Charlotte, including right through my school's sorority recruitment and Bid Day! Lately the rain has been back in full force, except now with colder temperatures attached to it. At least my rain boots have been getting a lot of use!
  • A fun weekend ahead: This past weekend, I was supposed to pay a visit to my former college to see my best friend (and help her with wedding planning!). That visit sadly had to be postponed since I had a nasty cough throughout the whole weekend! But this upcoming weekend, I have some fun plans to make up for all of the R&R. On Friday is my sorority's annual Mallard Ball, ADPi's very interesting take on fall semi-formal! And on Saturday night is my college's all-school semi-formal. These types of events are always a good time, and even more special since it's my senior year.
  • Friends who understand. Going to be real for a second- my blog has been stressing me out a lot lately. I have found myself playing the comparison game with other bloggers, and also being very critical of myself. Typically I just process all of these feelings on my own, or sometimes text blogging friends, but lately I have started opening up about my blog-related insecurities to a few of my best friends at college. None of them blog or really understand the blogging world, but they are there with hugs and listening ears, and honestly that has meant the world to me! Do any of you ever vent about your blogs to friends or family outside of the blogging world? :-)
  • Thanksgiving Break! It seems unreal to me that Thanksgiving break is just about two weeks away. Where is this semester going? I have really fun travel plans for Thanksgiving!! I'm headed north, but not going home to Maine. I can't wait to share more! I'm also starting to plan some outfits for my travels.

Purchases:
  • As I said in last week's post, most of November is a big month of no-spending for me, since I like to go as big as I can on Black Friday every year! I've been trying my best with saving this week, although I did spend more money then intended on food. #HungryCollegeKid
  • One little purchase that I did make this week though was on this nail polish, to coordinate with my dress for my college's semi-formal this weekend!
  • As I continue making a wish-list for Black Friday, I keep falling more and more in love with cute boots like these and these!

     Hope that the beginning of your week has gotten off to a great start! Be sure to check out yesterday's post if you haven't yet- it's unlike any post I've ever (co-)written before on Southern Belle in Training!

Farewell, Southern Belle in the 'Bunk!

      Dress: Sold out {Similar here}

     I have so enjoyed bringing all of you my fun summer post series, Southern Belle in the 'Bunk! This was my tribute to my hometown of Kennebunk, Maine. This summer will most likely be my last full summer of living here at home, as I am entering my senior year of college in North Carolina, and planning to live in the South following college.

     I had planned to keep this series going until Friday, August 14th, but sadly there is just too much going on it my life right now to continue it! I have been working 40 hours every week since coming back from France (including one week of overtime!), and with leaving for Charlotte in just a few weeks, all of my free time right now really needs to be focused on packing for school and spending time with friends and family before leaving (and scheduling regular blog posts!). As much as I adored doing this series, the posts did take longer for me to write as I wrote in them about both fashion and the locations that I shot at!

     You can still reference any of the posts from this series by clicking on the Southern Belle in the 'Bunk label on the sidebar of my blog's homepage. Also: below are two links to blog posts from Summer 2014 when I shot at two locations in Kennebunk and Kennebunkport that are also scenic and dear to my  heart!! I didn't include these spots in the Southern Belle in the 'Bunk series, but I thought I would include the links to these older posts to close out the series.

*A Day at the Beach (taken at my favorite beach in Kennebunk)
*Very Violet (taken outside former President Bush's Maine summer home in Kennebunkport)

     Thanks so much for all of the positive comments and feedback during this series! So glad y'all enjoyed.

      xoxo Your Wannabe Southerner who is definitely still a Mainer,

Southern Belle in the 'Bunk: True Colors.

     This is Week Six for my Friday summer post series here on the blog, called Southern Belle in the Bunk. This blog series combines my love of fashion, beautiful scenic locations for fashion posts, and the fact that I'm spending this summer back in my hometown area of the Kennebunks region of Southern Maine! You can read more about the inspiration for this series in the intro post HERE, Week One HERE, Week Two HERE, Week Three HERE , Week Four HERE, and Week Five HERE! Xo

     I thought that it would be hard to top Week Two of Southern Belle in the 'Bunk as my favorite week of this series, but this week's post might have just stolen my heart. I do have acknowledge of course that the beautiful photography for both this week and Week Two was done by my dear friend Katie! She sure knows he way around the camera, doesn't she?

     Blue is my favorite color. Specifically, my favorites shades are Tiffany blue/aquamarine, or sky blue. Yet whether I like it or not, I always seem to find my way back to this bright blue shade that I'm wearing in this beautiful dress from eShakti. Bright blue and white were my high school's colors, and azure blue and white (such a specific shade of blue :-) ) are the colors of my sorority, Alpha Delta Pi! So when I saw this dress on the eShakti website last month, I knew that it had to be mine. Not only is it the perfect summer sundress because of the lightweight feel and the beautiful embroidery, but it seemed perfect for me since it came in my "true colors."

     Sadly this dress is now sold out, but eShakti has tons of other beautiful summery sundresses that would be perfect for the end of the summer season! They almost always have some sort of a sale or promotion going on, so definitely give them a visit. You can also check out this blog post from last summer, from when I styled a different eShakti sundress (which I still love and have been wearing this summer as well!).

    I also want to note that the bracelet that I'm wearing, from an online shop called Swell Caroline (I did a blog post with them a few months ago!), is currently on serious sale! This bracelet has become one of my favorites for summer, and it's available in five colors!! It does run a little large- just as a heads up! But I would say that I have an average wrist size, and I'm still able to enjoy wearing it! It matches and coordinates well with so many things, and I always love adding a touch of florals to any outfit.

     I have linked some other beautiful sundresses in these colors at the bottom of the blog post!

     The location:

{Photo from my Instagram account - @miss_alk}

     During the first week of Southern Belle in the 'Bunk, I did my post on a bridge that crosses over one of the rivers in my town, the Mousam River, at a spot that's very close to where it meets the ocean. The photographs for this post were taken not even a mile away from where Week One's post was done! There is a beach right near where the Mousam River meets the ocean called Parsons' Beach. Technically it is a private beach, but the owners of it are gracious enough to let the public use it! It has a far more natural feel then any of the other beaches in town. My parents and I used to enjoy going there more when I was younger, but parking is very limited at Parsons' Beach, and once I got older most of my friends in high school always preferred going to the larger beaches in town, so that is where I always seemed to end up. Shooting these photos this week made me rediscover my love for this darling area though!

     And yet- I never even made it onto the beach for this shoot! Parsons' Beach has the most beautiful long, tree lined drive leading up to the beach and parking area. There is also a small horse farm and fields on both sides of the road, past the trees. When the lighting is right, it is truly the most scenic sight. I don't think that this will be the last time that I do blog photos here!

     Stay tuned for more Southern Belle in the 'Bunk coming next week, and tomorrow I'm sharing my first travel recap from France!

Southern Belle in the Bunk: Strawberries & the Sea.

     This is Week Four for my Friday summer post series here on the blog, called Southern Belle in the Bunk. This blog series combines my love of fashion, beautiful scenic locations for fashion posts, and the fact that I'm spending this summer back in my hometown area of the Kennebunks region of Southern Maine!      My oh my does it feel good to be back to fashion blogging again! I had an unexpected break during my last two weeks abroad in France, and then during my first few days home I experienced severe jet lag, as well as feeling not so great due to some bug bites that I returned home with... which were later in the week diagnosed by my doctor officially as bed bug bites. :/ So dealing with that hasn't been the greatest. Honestly the highlight of my week has just been getting into somewhat of a routine again and going back to my usual eight hour shifts at work! Haha.

     Fashion blogging is another part of my regular routine that I am so happy to be getting back to! In honor of the fact that I was making the switch from living in 90+ degree temperatures (and extreme humidity) in Nice to cool and breezy temperatures in the low 70s back in Maine, this outfit seemed like the perfect fit for my first post to re-kick off my summer Friday post series, Southern Belle in the 'Bunk! It feels amazing to be in weather again that is cool enough that I can actually where jeans and other pants, and with all of the bug bites and scabs on my legs this week (sorry if that's TMI but it's true!), I wanted to wear pants especially in the earlier part of the week.

     I rediscovered my love for this fun applique top upon my arrival back home! I have had this shirt since high school, and it always seems to resurface now and again in my closet. It is the perfect way to dress up a pair of skinny jeans, but I have also paired it before with a mini skirt and heels! Tops like this are so easy because you really only need minimal accessories with them. I chose to go with a fun little bracelet stack and my favorite purse, my vintage Chanel!! Some of you on my Instagram were asking about it- it was originally my grandma's, who gave it to my mom, and she gave it to me last year. :-)

The location:

Can you tell that I'm throwing a rock in these pictures? Haha!

     For this week's edition of Southern Belle in the 'Bunk, I wanted to do something beach themed (especially since I had just been away from home for a month in the middle of summer!). But since I frequently shoot my blog photos at two of my favorite beaches in town, and the whole point of this post series was for me to reach outside my comfort zone of my favorite OOTD locations here at home, I decided instead to think outside the box a little bit and remember another favorite ocean spot of mine that is a little bit more off the beaten path.

     Strawberry Island is the name of the area that these photos were taken in! It's not exactly an island... more just like a clump of rocks that can or can't be accessed depending on the tides. I think that at one point there was more of a tiny island that you could walk out to after the rocks, and that there were some bushes growing on the island, including some strawberry plants. At least that's how I think it got its name! Anyways, this little area is just under a mile away from one of the local beaches. You can even see some of the beach houses in the background of the pictures! It's found on a dead-end road, so it's a very quiet little area. The perfect spot for pictures (or watching the sunset) when it's low tide! My mom took these pictures of me right at sunset, and the light was very interesting on this day, as you can see reflected in the photos! They have a nice soft summer glow to them.

Southern Belle in the 'Bunk: Main(e) Street.

     This is Week Three for my Friday summer post series here on the blog, called Southern Belle in the Bunk. This blog series combines my love of fashion, beautiful scenic locations for fashion posts, and the fact that I'm spending this summer back in my hometown area of the Kennebunks region of Southern Maine! You can read more about the inspiration for this series in the intro post HERE, Week One HERE, Week Two HERE, and Week Three HERE! Xo

Top: Talbots {Last season, Similar here} || Shorts: J. Crew Factory || Shoes: L.L. Bean || Hat: c/o Pack-A-Hat || Clutch: c/o Pack-A-Hat || Bracelet: {Gift, Similar here} || Lips: Revlon Super Lustrous Lipstick in Pink Velvet

     Welcome to Main(e) Street (see what I did there? #punny) in my hometown! For this hometown look, I wanted to show what I think is typical Kennebunk style, which is kind of a laid-back, New England preppy look. The blue J. Crew Factory shorts and the anchors on my top (and lobsters on my shoes!) build on the New England feel of the area, and it's a summery and put-together outfit, but without looking overdone. Y'all know that my own personal style is a bit more "out there," but sometimes it's fun to go "back to your roots!"

     I am also so excited to be wearing styling and reviewing this fun and nifty hat from Cappelli Straworld called the Pack-A-Hat! It has such a cool concept to it- which you can kind of see illustrated in some of these photos! The Pack-A-Hat is the ideal hat for traveling. It comes packaged in an adorable clutch (which can also double as a purse on its own!), and it folds perfectly into the clutch. Then when you're ready to wear your hat, you simply pull it out and unfold it! What a smart invention. The best part is that if you need to take your hat with you in a suitcase or duffle bag for traveling then you don't need to worry about it getting crushed or damaged since it is already packed away! The Pack-A-Hat retails for $25 and can be purchased here!

The location:

      The downtown area of neighboring town of Kennebunkport usually tends to get all of the attention, since Kennebunkport is the more touristy area between the two Kennebunks. But Kennebunk's Main Street is still what I consider to be a quinntessential American small town Main Street area! It is peaceful, well-kept, and filled with a few small businesses, restaurants, and the historic Kennebunk Inn sits right in the middle of it all.

     Last year, the town bought out a lot the used to house a gas station that had gone out of business. They tore down the building, and instead constructed an outdoor ice skating rink! It is open all winter long, and even equipped for night skating. In the warmer months, this space is used for Farmers' Markets and town festivals. I didn't get any pictures of this new space for this post, but it is just a block or so up from where these pictures were taken! And I had fun trying out the new ice skating rink over this past Christmas break.

    In other Kennebunks news, Kennebunkport was in national news this week because former First Lady Barbara Bush had her 90th birthday party (and a Bush family reunion!) at the Bush's summer home in Kennebunkport! Christian singers Amy Grant and Michael W. Smith, as well as country singer Reba McIntire were performers at the party. Another interesting party feature was that antique cars were somehow incorporated in... not sure if there was a private car show put on for the Bush family, or if just anyone that owned a certain type of antique car was invited to the party, but during June 7th/8th, there were more antique cars driving through Kennebunkport than newer cars!! Such a fun sight. Anyways, happy birthday Barbara Bush!!

     I hope that you all have enjoyed the first four weeks of my Southern Belle in the 'Bunk post series, where I have combined my love of fashion and scenic locations for my blog photos, all while wanting to tell you all more about where I am from. I will be taking a break from these posts during the next four weeks while I am studying abroad in France, but Southern Belle in the 'Bunk will return on Friday, July 17!

    Also- I leave for France TOMORROW! I have scheduled a brief post for tomorrow, which will update y'all about what blogging is going to be looking like for me while I'm abroad. Hope that y'all will check in for it! :-)

Southern Belle in the 'Bunk: Fields of Blue.

You can read more about the inspiration for this series in the intro post HERE, Week One HERE, and Week Two HERE! Xo

      It's already week three of my summer post series, Southern Belle in the 'Bunk! I am so happy that a lot of you are really enjoying this series. I have decided that I will be taking a break from these posts during the four weeks that I am studying abroad in France, but the series will commence for late July and in August until when I leave to go back to Charlotte! Next week's post will be the last before I leave for France!

      I try to save talking about the locations of each week's post until later on, but in this case the location influenced how I picked my outfit! So these pictures were taken at the Kennebunk Blueberry Plains, which are in the western part of town. It's an expansive mass of land that suddenly breaks apart from the dense forests that cover most of town (that isn't on the direct coast or the small downtown), and in the Plains the skies become as large as the eye can see and the "trees" are limited to small brush type plants. I think that you really do feel as though you have been transported to the Southwest part of the country! So I tried to pick an outfit that I felt had some Southwestern influences; from the pattern in this dress, the Aztec print in my tote, and the multi-strand beaded necklace!

     This is exactly the type of outfit that I love wearing for school. It's what I call "casual dressy." When you wear an outfit like this to class, you're making a statement that you put time everyday into  your personal style. Yet this wouldn't make you look so dressed up like you're going to a formal event or something completely out of place!!

      I'm taking a break this week from the water based locations around my town, and instead showing y'all a taste of West Kennebunk. Interstate 95, Maine's only major highway, runs right through the middle of town, and this is the unofficial divide between Kennebunk and West Kennebunk. West Kennebunk is not a separate town, it's still apart of my town, but it has a very different feel to it! When in West Kennebunk, you're a good 15-20 mins from the ocean, and instead the roads are filled with beautiful forests and farmlands, as well as lots of residential communities. Many of my friends live in West Kennebunk, as the area that I'm from is quite spread out!

     The Kennebunk Blueberry Plains are one of West Kennebunk's biggest natural gems. This wide expanse of prairie lands is a rare find in a New England state. Out in the Plains, you feel transported to another side of the country. The reason that this place called the Blueberry Plains is because wild blueberries are known to grow freely out there.

      Stay tuned for another round of Southern Belle in the 'Bunk next Friday!

Southern Belle in the 'Bunk: Spring Glow.

     This is Week One for my Friday summer post series here on the blog, called Southern Belle in the Bunk. This blog series combines my love of fashion, beautiful scenic locations for fashion posts, and the fact that I'm spending this summer back in my hometown area of the Kennebunks region of Southern Maine! You can read more about the inspiration for this series in the intro post HERE, and Week One HERE! Xo

Dress: Lilly Pulitzer for Target {Sold out, Similar here} || Shoes: Nine West || Earrings: Talbots || Bracelet: c/o Stella & Dot || Lips: NYC Color Expert Last Lipstick in Forever Fuschia

     I am oh-so-excited about today's post! First off- I just cannot get over the amazing natural lighting in these photos! Lately I have been very inspired by the fashion blog Gal Meets Glam by blogger Julia Engel. If you aren't familiar with Gal Meets Glam, Julia's husband Thomas does all of her photography, and he always captures Julia in the most beautiful natural light! I guess this post was my attempt of being inspired by their photography. :-) This is also the second week of my summer series, Southern Belle in the 'Bunk. More on the location of this post later, but first for the outfit details!

    This was the second dress that I was able to score on Pink Sunday during the Lilly Pulitzer for Target launch! (I featured my other shift dress in the #LillyforTargetLinkUp that my blog bestie Michaela and I held a few weeks ago!) Despite being a self proclaimed girly-girl, I don't own that many clothing pieces that are this pink! So I was excited to score this Lilly dress at Target and bring a little bit more pink cheer into my closet. Like my other Lilly for Target dress, I was very impressed with the quality of these shifts for the price, and I thought that they fit well!

     Since the dress is so bright and eye-catching, I paired it with a classic pair of nude pumps, delicate gold jewelry, a fun side pony hairstyle and fresh blooms from my Grandma's garden! For one last pop of color I used one of my favorite NYC Color lipsticks which perfectly matched the dress! I don't mind splurging on lip products in neutral or lighter pink/peach shades that I will wear all the time, but for very bright lip products, I always buy drugstore brands since I don't wear them as much. The Expert Last Lipsticks from NYC Color are $1.99 at the drugstore and have amazing pigmentation and last well throughout the day! They are a go-to for me when I need a bold lipstick in a specific vivid shade. (And no this post isn't sponsored at all- just me raving about a product that I love!)

     With the light and locations being so stunning in these photos, of course my photographer had to jump in a shot at the end!! This is my best friend of over 12 years, Katie! She has a passion for photography and takes a lot of my blog photos when I'm home in Maine (and this isn't the first time she's been on the blog!)

      The location:

     In the first week of Southern Belle in the 'Bunk, I did my blog shoot on the bridge over the Mousam River, one of two rivers in Kennebunk. When looking at a map of town, one can see that the Mousam River runs through the Southwestern part of town, and other river, the Kennebunk, is Northeastern of the Mousam (#geographynerd). Both rivers end up coming to meet the sea within just a few miles of each other though!

     I thought that it would be fitting for this week's pictures to be taken where the Kennebunk River comes to meet the sea. I did them in two locations: one on a bridge similar to the bridge that I shot at on the Mousam River, and the later pictures in a small field with beautiful flowering trees near the banks of the river between Kennebunk and Kennebunkport. Katie took these pictures for me right at sunset, and I already said this, but the natural lighting was truly incredible!

     I am luckly to be from a town that has not only ocean coastline and wonderful beaches, but also two beautiful rivers flowing through it! This might not be the last time I feature these two rivers for this post series...

P.S. Since my dress was sold out, I have linked instead some similar pink shift dresses from the regular Lilly website below!
