Wedding Wednesday: My Maine Bridal Shower.

My first bridal shower was held a few weeks ago on July 7th, while Ryan and I were visiting my parents in Maine. My mom threw me a lovely and intimate tea party themed bridal shower, with the help of my high school best friend Julia! I'm excited to recap the shower here today for Wedding Wednesday.

TRAVEL GUIDE: 5 Days in Maine - First Timer's Itinerary.

For Labor Day Weekend this year, my boyfriend Ryan came to visit my home state of Maine with me for the first time. While I always enjoy seeing the beauty of southern Maine in the summer months, it was definitely special to see my hometown and home state through the eyes of a first-time visitor. I feel like my parents and I did a great job planning out a good itinerary for Ryan's first Maine trip, and I'd recommend a similar itinerary for other first-time Maine visitors.

There were a few points in our trip that we visited with my family and friends, and I'll also add in additional suggestions for other activities you could do as a tourist with that extra time.

Travel Diary: Maine's Prettiest Views at Quill Hill.

This summer, I found what I'm pretty certain is the most stunning mountain view in my home state of Maine. I'm going to go so far as to even say this might be the prettiest view in the whole state- mountains or not! And that's coming from someone who is in love with the gorgeous beaches and ocean coastline in Maine. Please allow me to introduce you to the heaven on earth that is Quill Hill!

Summer 2020 Maine Travel Diary.

It was the highlight of my summer to get to spend a week home to Maine a few weeks ago. After the crazy and uncertain year that is 2020, I will never take trips back to my hometown for granted, ever again. I don't have a full Travel Guide to share today... just a personal Travel Diary with some photos from a special week, and a few thoughts and memories!

TRAVEL GUIDE: Ultimate Guide to Kennebunk & Kennebunkport Maine.

Welcome to my hometown region in Southern Maine! I'm excited to finally bring you this Travel Guide, which is quite honestly many years overdue. The Kennebunks is a charming region of Maine to plan a visit to, and I'm excited to share a local's perspective with you. I was born and raised in Kennebunk, and I lived there until moving away for college. Although I've never moved back home as an adult, my parents are still there so I do enjoy visits home a few times a year. Even though I know Kennebunk as my hometown, it could be a perfect summer vacation spot for you!

Ramblings:
  • The news is OUT: Thank you all so much for your kind comments and congratulatory messages the past two days since I shared my big news about my new job and upcoming move! It was seriously so hard for me to keep all of that quiet for the past couple weeks after everything was finalized. It is traditional in radio jobs not to announce your next move until you've finished on-air at your previous station, so I wanted to honor that. I am SO UNBELIEVABLY excited as y'all can probably imagine. If you didn't catch yesterday and Tuesday's blog posts... click here
  • Trip home fail: For the second time now I have failed at making a trip home to Maine! I wasn't able to get home for Christmas this year due to questionable weather over the holidays. I was planning to be home Wednesday-Saturday of this week as my last visit for many months before the move.... but just in time for that a big Nor'Easter storm decided to hit and bring lots of snow to New England! I'm staying put here in Vermont to be safe. I feel like now every time I say I'm going to Maine something weather-wise jinxes it- lol!
  • Moving blog post: Since I'll have now done two big out-of-state moves in two years, I'll be writing a detailed blog post in April that will be a complete guide to moving out-of-state! My question for y'all: would it be most helpful as a resource for you if I broke this into a mini series of a few posts? I'm thinking one post about packing specifically, a post about non-packing related moving tasks (like address changes, booking a moving truck, switching utilities, etc), and lastly one about settling into your new home and city? Or would you prefer one BIG post with all the info? Please let me know! I'm excited to blog about all of this and share everything my parents and I have learned last year and this year with y'all.

Purchases: No fun purchases again this week with the move coming up (moving out-of-state is $$$$ y'all!), but I am so excited to soon be living in a city and state that has actual locations of all of my favorite stores again!! Charlottesville has some really great shopping options and my wallet isn't even ready....

Wishlist:

  • For any spring or summer brides-to-be... wouldn't this be the most darling bridal shower dress? It could be your "something blue" and also has beautiful white lace!
  • This is the cutest white top for spring which would easily transition from the office to happy hour!
  • Lately I have been wanting to add more wrap dresses to my closet with starting my new job soon- they are such a classy style and you can wear them for many occasions! This gorgeous wrap dress is an online exclusive and it's perfect for spring. It's more of an investment piece- but those are needed sometimes!
  • I am so excited to decorate my new apartment, and looking for a few pieces of decor that showcase Virginia pride to buy this spring. This cute wall print is under $10 and would be such a fun way to show state pride for my new home!
  • My favorite type of sweatshirts to wear are crewnecks. I love to wear them for weekend shifts at work, or for running errands. This one is my favorite fit and has a unique tassel detail- perfect for weekend athleisure looks!

Recipe of the week: My kitchen is already more than 50% packed up and I'm hoping that number will be 100% but this time next week, so I won't be doing any cooking for a bit! Over the next few weeks of Midweek Ramblings, I'll be sharing throwbacks to some favorite recipes from my Pinterest boards that I have made often in Vermont and Charlotte. This week's is Garlic Honey Glazed Salmon from Sally's Baking Addiction. I actually never made this in Vermont but this was one of my favorites when I lived in Charlotte- I need to make this again soon after I move! It's the easiest salmon recipe and definitely a go-to recipe if I had company coming for dinner.

Song of the week: Dearly Departed by Aaron Carter. Fun fact: Aaron Carter released a comeback album around this time last year! It didn't really receive much chart success or radio airplay, but despite that there were some surprisingly great songs on the album. Aaron has a completely different sound than he did with his childhood music- he has kind of Justin Beiber vibes now. Anyways, I rediscovered his newer album on Spotify this past week and have been listening to the song Dearly Departed a lot, it's so catchy!

On the blog this week:

Enjoy the rest of your week! Stay tuned tomorrow for a special Friday post - it's another collaboration with my friends at Pink Colony

     God Bless,

     xoxo Annaliese

Ramblings:
  • Being a tourist at home: This past weekend was my first weekend off since starting my job! Since I wasn't able to go to Charlotte as I had hoped, I went home to Maine instead and tried to make the best of things. Overall it was a quiet, but nice visit! I have two friends from there who are both starting grad school soon, so it was good to spend time with them before that begins. I also spent a lot of time with my family, and time at the ocean, which I miss so much living far away from it now! Something that I've noticed since moving to Vermont is that I really have stopped taking growing up in Maine for granted, and I have a new appreciation for my hometown that I didn't have when I lived in Charlotte. I still very much want to be back in the South, but I hope when I do eventually move out-of-state again, I'll take my newfound love for Maine with me.
  • Planning fall fashion content + foliage: Fall in New England comes much earlier than the South- and Fall in Vermont comes even EARLIER! I am already starting to think about creative natural locations for shooting fall fashion content for the blog. Vermont has several scenic byway routes, which are very popular (especially in the fall) with tourists and locals alike. I've already been looking at which byways I would like to explore this fall. If you're planning a trip to New England or Vermont this fall- check out the byway list here
  • Giveaway fun! These is a fun little giveaway up on my Instagram currently, and it runs all week long, so there is still time to enter! I'm teaming up with Jewel Toned, a wonderful shape-wear and undergarments company, to give one lucky winner a Summer Style Pack, featuring five Jewel Toned pieces. Speaking of giveaways... I'm getting so very excited for my week of 5th Blogiversary giveaways, which will be happening at the end of August/beginning of September. I shot most of the images for the giveaways last week and I know y'all will be excited as well!

Purchases:
  • A trip home to Maine now means SHOPPING! It's so funny-when I lived in Charlotte I didn't do much shopping in Maine, minus a couple local spots that I always hit up. But now that I live in Vermont, aka what feels like the home of the least chain stores (or chain anything) in the nation, I have to get my shopping fill when I'm home, or when driving back to Vermont through New Hampshire! My grandma and I went out to lunch and for a bit of shopping this weekend, and of course we had to stop at Nordstrom Rack! I've found some of my best Rack finds on past trips there with my grandma. She bought me this darling necklace as one of my birthday gifts- the crown reminded me of the Charlotte city logo, which is so dear to my heart! Fun fact: if I ever were to get a tattoo, it would probably be a tiny version of the Charlotte City crown, on the side of my ribs.
  • We also went to one of my favorite shoe retailers (yet another place not in Vermont), and my grandma bought me these adorable booties as another birthday gift!! Can't wait to style these all this fall.
  • During my rest stop at the Mall of New Hampshire, I stocked up on a few packs of these! They're one of my hair essentials, and were on sale for 2 packs for $10 (a great deal)!
  • I love shopping at Lilly Pulitzer Signature stores... possibly even more then actually Lilly stores! I think Signature stores have a lot of local charm to them, and they definitely mark down  older Lilly more than regular stores do sometimes. I paid a visit to Maine's only Lilly Signature store, The Pink Tangerine, during my weekend home with my friend Katie. I found this adorable tank! Even though it's still on Lilly's website, it was amazingly 40% off at The Pink Tangerine!  Such a good buy and I couldn't resist!

Wishlist:
  • Still have all the heart eyes for this tote- this is probably the fourth time I've posted it on my wishlist, ahhh! #workbaggoals
  • I saw this dress at The Pink Tangerine while I was home. I sadly have NO REASON to wear this in Vermont... but isn't this THE CUTEST dress?!
  • This is a different take on a basic t-shirt. Would be cute for fall transition outfits for work!
  • This top screams "early spring" to me more than "early fall," but I still love the bold pattern on it!!
  • An adorable ruffle sleeve dress for fall that is under $50 and comes in a few colors!

On the blog this week:

And a quick note about something not blog/wishlist/fashion related... I just wanted to say a couple words about the horrific acts in Charlottesville that happened earlier this week. Hearing about things like this happening in America in 2017 absolutely devastates me. What makes me even more sad is that many of the individuals associated with these terrible hate groups claimed to act in the name of God/Christianity.... absolutely sickening! These people represent everything that Christianity is not (as most Americans of course DO know). I'm not sure what church they belong to... but I have certainly never stepped foot in a church that has preached anything about hate or white supremacy.

I really do not discuss my political views on my blog or social media- partly because I work in the media and don't believe I should disclose much about that with the type of job that I have, and partly because this last election season got quite heated, to say the least. I witnessed a lot of friendships ended over politics last year, and I don't think that should ever be a reason to remove someone from your life. (Just to clarify.... belonging to/supporting a hate group = YES- definitely a reason to end relationship/friendship. However simply having a difference in political opinions = No.)

Anyways, with that little preface there- I do generally speaking hold conservative political views, and it really saddens my heart especially to see some people grouping hate groups and the alt-right together with all conservatives. These terrible people couldn't be more different from a lot of the ideals of most conservatives and the GOP. I have been encouraged to see some conservative politicians and commentators speak out against what happened. A favorite tweet of mine was from conservative commentator Allie Stuckey of The Conservative Millennial. She tweeted "Conservatives should denounce the alt-right even more than liberals do. It's everything we are trying to show people we aren't." Amen amen amen!

Anyways- sorry for that little sidetrack there, just wanted to share a few things that have been on my mind for a few days. 😊

     God Bless,

xoxo Annaliese (or Charlotte XO on air!)

NORDSTROM SALE 2017: Styling My Purchases!

In past years, it's been hard for me to be excited about buying fall clothes in the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale, because when living in the South it honestly didn't get that cold until late November. But now that I will be spending this fall season in Vermont, I'm expecting a very chilly fall! My fall wardrobe definitely needs some upgrades, so I was especially excited for this year's sale.

I decided to bring my Nordstrom Sale clothing purchases home on my quick trip to Maine last weekend! The weather was sunny and beautiful while I was home, however being on the Maine Coast it does tend to get a little breezy at night- even in the height of summer! So it was the perfect weather to style this NSale outfit- I didn't feel hot or sweaty at all while wearing this! The first few pictures were taken near a beach in my hometown (the road that leads to that beach is tree and field lined and just beautiful in the golden hour!), and the last few were taken by Nubble Lighthouse in York Beach, Maine!

Some of you might remember that I did a little try-on haul with this outfit on my IG stories (@miss_alk) last week. At first I was unsure if I wanted to keep this Lush blouse. So many bloggers had raved about it, but when I first tried it on I was really unsure if I liked the fit and style on myself. But- I decided to sleep on it and think it over, and in the end I decided to keep it!! I think it is a good staple piece that will match a lot in my closet. I always get so much use out of my white tops- so another is always a good investment!

I am just in love with these AG Jeans from the Nordstrom Sale! I've tried on AG Jeans before and fell in love with them, but I could never pull the trigger to splurge on a pair of $200+ denim when I lived in a warm climate and also was on a college budget. However- the sale price on these and the fact that I'll be living in jeans this fall and winter in Vermont convinced me to make the splurge, and I'm so glad I did! They're also my first pair of raw hem jeans, and I like them more than I thought I did.

So TODAY is the DAY that the Nordstrom Sale is open to everyone!!! This means that you no longer need a Nordstrom credit or debit card to shop the sale. It also means though that items will really start selling out fast, so now is the time to buy if you see something that you like! Some favorites are linked below:

     Happy Shopping!

MAINE TRAVEL GUIDE: Visiting the Kennebunks in the Winter.

This is a post that is probably much overdue (as in, by several years) on Southern Belle in Training! It was my most recent trip home a few weeks ago that finally inspired me to write it, and I'm so glad that I finally was able to put something together.

If you're a newer reader friend around the blog, let me fill you in a little bit. I've called North Carolina home since I moved here for college in Fall 2012, but whether I like to admit it or not- I'm a native Mainer! This is how my blog got its name- "Southern Belle" is for me living in NC now and having an affinity for all things Southern, and "in Training" comes from the fact that I'm from Maine. My parents and most of my mom's side of the family still live in Maine, as do my friends from high school.

I'm from Kennebunk, Maine, which is a coastal town in the Southern part of the state. Kennebunk is often considered the same thing as Kennebunkport, which is a big New England tourist destination. Fun fact: they are actually two separate (but neighboring towns) towns! Kennebunkport is the bigger vacation destination, and has more of the hotels and bed and breakfasts. It's also the summer home to former President George Bush and his wife Barbara. Kennebunk is the more residential town, and something surprising is that more of the public beaches are located in Kennebunk as well! Although I'm from Kennebunk, I've spent my fair share of time in Kennebunkport as well. I worked in retail at a small store in Kennebunkport for the three summers that I went home in college. (I'm actually still close with many of my older coworkers from there!).

On the rock jetty at Colony Beach in Kennebunkport {Coat // similar beanie}

In Summer 2015, the last full summer that I spent in Maine, I did a post series here on the blog called "Southern Belle in the 'Bunk." I took my outfit pictures over May and June of that summer at really unique and what I thought were naturally beautiful locations around my hometown, as a way to celebrate what where I'm from meant to me. Plus- it allowed me to get out of my comfort zone a bit in picking locations for blog photos! (You can find all of the posts by clicking the Southern Belle in the 'Bunk label on my blog's sidebar.) But surprisingly, I've never actually done an actual "travel guide" blog post for my hometown area.

I realized in 2016 how many bloggers were taking vacations to the area that I call home. I had so much fun seeing Instagram photos and reading blog posts and recognizing all of the locations in different people's photos! It made me realize though that it was much overdue to write more about where I'm from, and not just shoot outfit photos there. ;-)

While Maine is more traditionally thought of as a summer vacation destination, it can be a great place to take a little trip to if you're looking for a little taste of a New England winter experience. Without further ado, my travel guide:

{Dock Square Christmas Tree, Kennebunkport}

To Do:

My number one tip for visiting Maine in the winter season is below:

Visit the Kennebunks during Christmas Prelude: Christmas Prelude is a special celebration that runs for two weekends each year in early December. All of the hotels, shops and restaurants in Kennebunkport all get completely decked out the celebrate the beginning of the holiday season, and it really is a magical time to be in the area! The main event is the lighting of the Dock Square tree (pictured above - it stays up into January). There is caroling in the streets with local choirs, special events open to the public at many of the hotels, and just a feeling of holiday magic throughout the town. I only made it home for Prelude once in my four years of college - usually my final exams ended too late in December for me to make it home. I wasn't able to make it this year either- but I'm hoping that I can in a future year soon!

And if you're interested in visiting Maine in other parts of the winter (of which you still have many months to choose from), here are some other activities:

Walk on the beach: There is nothing quite like Maine beaches. While my heart will still always long for beaches with tropical ocean temperatures and palm trees, Maine beaches are truly one of a kind and I do love them as well. They're naturally beautiful and have a rugged feel to them, and very few of them are built up. Many are more rocky than sandy, but Southern Maine especially does have it's share of sandy beaches also.
In the summer, most of Maine's beaches have permitted parking, and they're also often overcrowded between both locals and tourists who are trying to make the most of the short summer season. Winter really is the time to enjoy the beach for all that it is! While it is way too cold for any sort of summer activities, there is really nothing like a long winter beach walk. And parking (at least in the Kennebunk beaches) is free from mid-September through I believe mid-June, so that definitely covers the winter months. My favorite beach Kennebunk beach is Gooches Beach, and my favorite Kennebunkport beach is Colony Beach. Both beaches have a rock jetty that visitors can walk out on - it's a great way to really experience the ocean and waves.

Shop in Kennebunkport: Kennebunkport has the most charming area of little shops, called Dock Square. While the area certainly hits its peak in the summer months, most of the stores do stay open year round (or at least through Christmas Prelude - see above!). You can find just about anything in Kennebunkport: typical touristy items,  coffee shops, art galleries, jewelry and clothing stores, and plenty of made-in-Maine gift shops, with unique items that you won't find anywhere else! One of my favorite discount jewelry stores called The Best of Everything, which is kind of like a local version of Charming Charlie, is located just over the bridge from Dock Square on the Kennebunk side (there is a river and bridge separating the two towns). Some of the Dock Square stores do close during weekdays in the winter, but a good amount of them do stay open during weekday weekends, even into January and February.

Cross Country Skiing at Harris Farms: This activity is actually located about 30 mins away from Kennebunk, but if you're in Maine when there is enough snow on the ground then I promise that this is something you won't regret trying your hand at! This was one of my favorite winter activities growing up, and I have so many fond memories of my mom and I going to do this each year. Sadly I haven't made it out to do this on any recent winter trips home to Maine, but I know it will happen again one of these years.
Harris Farms is dairy farm that's located in the nearby town of Dayton, and they offer cross country skiing (and ski rentals) all over their beautiful trails and acreage in the winter months. A lot of Mainers are big down-hill skiiers- my family and I aren't, but I do very much love cross country skiing. The trails and Harris Farms are so beautiful, and it's a great workout!

{The Kennebunkport Inn}

Stay:

I have to preface this part of the travel guide by saying that I personally have never stayed at any of these hotels! Since I am from this area, I've never actually stayed at any of the hotels in the Kennebunks. But I have attended many functions at some of these hotels over the years,  eaten in their restaurants, and know people who work for them. And know people who have stayed at them! So hopefully that is almost as good? ;-)

If you're visiting for Christmas Prelude: Kennebunkport's two largest hotels, The Colony and The Nonantum, are both great choices for visiting the area. They're both historic properties and have great restaurants. The Nonantum is located right on the river and is less than a mile from the ocean, and The Colony has ocean views. Both of high school proms were held at The Nonantum, and one of my cousin's weddings! And one of my best friends from Maine works for The Colony. Both of these hotels do close after the Christmas Prelude season though, so they aren't open for the whole season.

If you're visiting later in the winter: I would recommend the Kennebunkport Inn (pictured above)! This beautiful and quaint inn is located right in the center of Dock Square, so it is in walking distance to most shopping and restaurants. They also have a great restaurant in the inn called One Dock. They're open year-round.

{Colony Beach in Kennebunkport}

Eat:

Pedro's: This is my FAVORITE Mexican restaurant of all-time. I have yet to find better tacos than at Pedro's. I swear. You probably wouldn't expect to visit the coast of Maine and find great Mexican food, but I promise that it's here! Fun fact: Pedro's doesn't always have the best service. I've actually had to call and complain to their management before about some really bad service that I've had while eating there. Normally I don't return to restaurants where I receive bad service.... BUT THESE TACOS. Y'ALL. Order a large plate of Mexican Street tacos and you will not be disappointed.

Federal Jack's: This is a restaurant and brewery, and it's a continued favorite spot for my high school friends to meet up at every now and then. They have a pretty extensive menu, and their restaurant is located right on the river, so the views aren't anything to complain about. In the summer their parking is a nightmare, but in the off-season it isn't usually that bad. They serve freshly brewed Shipyard beers, and one of my favorite beers of all time is a blueberry ale. I learned last year that you can actually find it at Trader Joe's stores nationwide- so sometimes I treat myself to that here in Charlotte for a little taste of home!

Mornings in Paris: This is a little French bakery that opened in Kennebunk (very close to Kennebunkport) about four or five years ago. It's a great spot to meet up with friends at when I am home for visits now. The pastries are decent, but the best things to get there are beverages. They have several types of specialty coffee drinks and lattes, but my two favorites are the Mexican hot chocolate in the winter months, and the lavender iced tea in the summer months.

And there you go! My guide to visiting my little neck of the (Northern) woods in the winter months. Have you visited Maine or the Kennebunks before? Are you planning any cold-weather winter vacations for this year?

     xoxo Annaliese

Winter Style in Maine.

Happy 2017 friends, and welcome back for my first post of the new year! I hope that y'all had a fun and safe NYE weekend. I had one of my best New Year's ever, and I can't wait to share much more about it in tomorrow's blog post.

For today, I'm backtracking a bit back to my trip last week when I went home to Maine for Christmas! I had planned to share a travel guide post all about visiting my hometown in Southern Maine during the winter months- but I'm still working on that. It should be on the blog this Friday! Instead today I am sharing an outfit that I wore during my trip for a day of some last minute Christmas shopping at the shops in Kennebunkport with my dad, and a walk on the beach after. This was actually one of the warmest days that I was home- it was in the mid 40s when these photos were taken. Maine in the winter sure gives me a new appreciation for Charlotte winters- haha!

This year more than ever before I am obsessed with peacoats and cute winter accessories. I had a lot of fun putting this outfit together, and building my look around this coat. I'm not usually a huge fan of wearing white in the winter, but by pairing the white beanie and leg warmers  with this fun ruffled top (which I also wore in this blog post), it was able to still keep the look winter appropriate.

Hope that y'all are having a great start to the week! I'm excited for lots of fun posts coming up on the blog this week and this month. And in my personal life, I begin my off-campus radio internship through my broadcasting school tomorrow! This is an opportunity that I'm so very blessed to have, and have waited a long time for. I'll try and share some updates soon.

xoxo Annaliese (new year = finally signing blog posts under my real name! ;-) )

My T-Shirt Quilt: My Favorite Graduation Present.

Photography by Deeana Kourtney Photography

One of my favorite sayings is "Good things are worth the wait." Such was definitely the case for my favorite graduation present, which just arrived to me a few weeks ago! It was such a special and priceless gift for me to receive that I had to dedicate a whole blog post to it. My high school best friend, Julia (who I usually call Jules here on the blog), has spent the better part of 2016 working on this beautiful t-shirt quilt for me! Isn't it incredible?!

I like to think of myself as a crafty person, but Jules's DIY abilities pretty much blow mine out of the water. A couple of years ago, she took a quilting class over the summer and made her first beautiful quilt. She had been wanting to try a t-shirt quilt, and I had been dying to have one made with my college and sorority t-shirts, so the timing of this worked out perfectly! I had saved all of my favorite college t-shirts. The quilt begins in the top left corner with a cute Southern themed t-shirt that I bought on my college orientation trip for my former university in summer 2012. The last shirt is one that I bought at the Carolina Cup this spring when I went with Cara (attending this event was a bucket list item for me during college!). In between are shirts from countless memories of two college orientations, homecomings, Bid Days, Greek Week, sorority formals and college semi-formals, and everything in between. The whole last four years for me is represented in this beautiful quilt! (And amazingly- I still have PLENTY of t-shirts left to wear from college. #sororitygirlprobs)

If you're thinking of doing a t-shirt quilt with your college or sorority shirts, or any t-shirts for that matter, DO IT!! If you don't have an incredibly crafty friend in your life, then fortunately there are lots of small companies online that will make t-shirt quilts for you. This is such an incredible way to preserve special memories, and to keep something alive for years to come.

Here's throwback picture of Jules and I - this is the night before I moved to NC for college! When we see each other at Christmas when I go back home to visit Maine, it will be the first time in 2016 that we've seen each other! Long distance best-friendships are the worst.

Happy Friday! Thanks so much for reading and have a great weekend! Soon I'll be posting more holiday gift guides.... what types of gift guides specifically would you like to see? Next week I am also planning to share a post about my favorite cookbooks so stay tuned for that!

Dressing for a Cold Front.

Sweater: L.L. Bean // T-shirt: Target // Jeans: American Eagle Outfiters // Boots: Tory Burch // Leg Warmers: Charlotte Russe {not online, similar here} // Earrings: In Pink {old, similar style here} // Bracelets: c/o Taudrey // Lips: Milani Brilliant Shine Lip Gloss in Bare Secret

Now that Valentine's Day has come and gone, Spring Break and Easter are on my radar, which also means the arrival of one of my favorite things- spring fashion! But just when I'm getting ahead of myself, the weather outside reminds me that despite being below the Mason-Dixon line, winter is still here for the time being. This past weekend, temperatures in Charlotte were in the 20s and 30s! It was quite chilly and reminded this native Mainer a little too much of home.

Luckily for me, it was the perfect time for me to break out this cardigan from L.L. Bean. Back when I was home in December, my friend Shara and I paid a visit to the L.L. Bean Factory Store in Freeport Maine, and that's wear I found the cardigan! It is soft and cozy, and the print on it is able to add a fun twist to wintery attire. One of the reasons that I hate freezing cold weather is because I find it very hard to dress for, but pieces like this help to brighten up your look and still help you to stay warm!

I hope that y'all had a wonderful Valentine's Day weekend, despite the cold weather in many parts of the country! Did you do anything fun? My weekend was pretty low key- I had a huge annotated bibliography due for my senior ethics class today, so I spent most of my weekend working on that. I also took the time to see two movies in the theaters for Galentine's plans with different girlfriends... which is unusual for me since I rarely go to the movies!

Midweek Ramblings + Recent Purchases.

{Follow on Instagram and Snapchat @miss_alk!}

Ramblings:
  • Home Sweet Charlotte. I came back to Charlotte early from my Christmas vacation- and honestly this was one of the best decisions that I've made in a long time! This city is what truly feels like my home now. I have a lot of errands or other things on my to-do list that I need to tackle before my semester starts in about a week and a half, and most of those things needed to be done down here. I'm also so excited to be in Charlotte for my first year of actually getting out and celebrating New Year's Eve!!
  • Rude behavior on airplanes: If you follow me on Snapchat (@miss_alk), then you know that I had quite the flying debacle with getting back to Charlotte a couple of nights ago! I had some severe delays during my layover, but even worse than this was the behavior of some of the people that I sat near once I finally made it onto my flight. All three of the people sitting in front of my had a conversation loud enough that the whole plane could have heard!! They were being so loud that I could hear them over my headphones when I had music in, and finally it became too much a disturbance that I had to turn my music off. There were also several people on the flight who were very clearly intoxicated, and the people behind me were eating smelly food during the majority of the flight. Flying on a commercial plane is a communal experience, and I think that we should all do our part to make the experience equally enjoyable for our neighbors!
  • My New Years' Resolution: I have two resolutions for 2016. They aren't that exciting, but they're goals that I really want to make happen. The first is to be productive and to succeed despite my difficult schedule for the spring semester (difficult in both the classes that I'm taking, and also the random times of day that my classes are at- all night classes and 8 ams!). The second is to have a smooth transition later in the year to adulthood, once my college journey comes to an end. I know that with hard work, planning, and also having a little bit of fun to balance things out that I can accomplish both of these!

Purchases:
  • I had a great Ulta coupon that expired right before Christmas so I did a little bit of retail damage there... one beauty splurge that I made was on this item which I can't wait to try out on NYE! (Giving credit where credit is due- I first saw it featured last week on Caitlin's blog Southern Curls and Pearls :-) )
  • I found the cutest ever black sequin skirt  at one of my favorite local Maine retailers last week! Unfortunately this store doesn't have an e-commerce site, but this skirt looks very similar.
  • It had been too long since I had made a trip up to the crown jewel of retail in my home state... aka the L.L. Bean Factory Store. ;-) During one of my last nights home, my friend Shara and I ventured up there, and I came home with this. I'm not normally an L.L. Bean fan- but I can't wait to wear this during the winter season!!

Stay tuned tomorrow- I'll be sharing my 2015 recap post! (In the meantime, check out 2014's!

Poncho Fever.

I am completely obsessed with this comfy and warm poncho sweater that I found on my day trip to Boston a couple of weeks ago! I've shared that during my senior year of college, my style has become a lot more laid-back on many school days. I'm really starting to take advantage of the fact that this probably the last year of my life for a long time that I have the freedom to dress down as often as I want! Poncho sweaters are a great way to still look put together for class or school commitments, but they require almost minimal effort on your part in terms of putting an outfit together. And if the weather is mild enough, you don't even need a jacket on top- it's a total all-in-one!

I rediscovered this cute black purse from Target  in my room while I was home for Christmas break. This was a favorite bag of mine over the last couple of years, and I forgot how much I truly liked it! I was so excited to see that this purse is still being sold at Target, so go and snatch it up if you're looking for a new bag that's both very affordable and also very cute! It also comes in a variety of other colors.

My dad took these blog photos for me on Christmas Eve, outside of a fun Christmas lights display near one of my favorite stores in the Kennebunkport shopping area. It is a bummer that the weather was a little dreary, but we got lucky and had a very mild Christmas this year, despite a lot of fog on Christmas Eve! The snow is on its way tomorrow- but luckily I am headed back to Charlotte today. :-)

Hope that all of you had a wonderful Christmas! And thank-you to everyone who left such wonderful comments on Thursday's post... (check it out if you haven't yet!)
