Prom & Formalwear Trends 2018.

     Today's post in sponsored by Angela & Alison. All opinions are honest and my own. Thank you for supporting the brands that support Southern Belle in Training!

     When I was growing up, I couldn't wait to go to prom someday. The idea of wearing a beautiful dress and getting to dance the night away with friends seemed like the dream high school experience! My two proms have obviously now came and went many years ago... I think I dreamed them to be something much more exciting in my head as a little girl than they actually were. 😉However- one thing that was just as good as I imagined was the dress part of prom. I loved both of my prom dresses (one of them I loved so much I re-wore it for a sorority formal in college!), and I felt absolutely gorgeous both years.

     Does anyone else wish that adults could go back to prom each year? (Mainly just so we can have a chance each spring to still get all dolled up and take advantage of spring formal trends!) I think I definitely need to investigate some black tie or formal events to attend and invite myself to for next spring... but until then, I'm definitely craving a fancy night out. Until then, I'm still fulfilling my passion for formalwear by collaboration today with Angela & Alison to share a couple of prom and formal dress trends for this season!

     Oh my goodness- I felt like a million dollars in this stunning gold dress from Angela & Alison! This is Style 81130, and I'm wearing a size 4, which was pretty much a perfect fit. This dress is made entirely of beautiful gold sequins, and it fades into silver sequins on the lower part of the dress, which creates a stunning illusion when the dress hits light! It's definitely a little bit of a sexy number between the plunging neckline and the leg slit, but sometimes you want to feel a little sexy for a very fancy occasion. (The chest part was a tiny bit big on me, so I am wearing nude colored sticky boobs with this dress!) I also love the beautiful beading along the sleeves. All in all, this is a gorgeous dress, and it would be incredible for prom, sorority formals, pageants, or other very formal occasions! It's my dream to someday attend a music awards show and get to walk on the red carpet- this might be the type of dress I'd wear for that.

     I also had so much fun modeling Angela & Alison Style 81019! This incredible dress comes in four colors, I'm wearing it in Royal Blue. I'm wearing a size 4 in this dress as well- however this one ran very small (as formal dresses sometimes can). A 6 probably would have fit me better. This was my first time wearing a mermaid style dress, and I think I'm in love with them now! What a flattering style. I felt so glamorous in this dress, and ready to attend some sort of fancy, big-city event. I am 5'7 for height reference, and I actually didn't need to wear heels with this dress! It fit me perfectly wearing flat sandals. The beautiful tulle skirt covers up your shoes anyways, so why not be comfortable?

      I felt like a true prom queen getting to try on these two beautiful Angela & Alison dresses!  Angela & Alison dresses are sold at fine formalwear boutiques located worldwide, with lots of locations in the US and Canada. There are many stores in Virginia that carry this dress line, in areas such as Harrisonburg, Fredericksburg, Roanoke, and the DC suburbs. You can also connect with Angela & Alison on social media by following them on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram - it's the easiest way to stay up to date with their latest beautiful formalwear collections!

     Which of the dresses from this post is your favorite? Have you worn an Angela & Alison dress before for a formal event or prom?

My Le Chateau Little Black Dress Story.

      I'm so excited for today's blog post! Not only am I wearing a chic LBD that would be perfect for all sorts of holiday festivities, but it's from a retailer that is especially near and dear to my heart, and I can't wait to introduce you to this brand and store today/ It is always such a special experience on the blog when I do get to partner with a company that I've been a fan of for a long time, and today's post is no exception to that!

      This is one of my favorite little black dresses that I've found in a long time! It could be dressed up or down for a variety of occasions. I think it would be perfect worn with tights and more subtle makeup for a formal office Christmas party, but it could also be very much dressed up for a holiday semi-formal event or night out, which is the look that I went for here. It's a very chic and figure-flattering dress, but it does so in a way that's very classy and not at all revealing (always a win-win!). And the long sleeves are an added bonus, especially for cold New England winters! I am headed to a cold destination for New Years' this year, so there is a high chance that this could end up being my NYE dress for 2018.

     My dress and gold clutch are both from Le Chateau, and today I am excited to share more about my love for this brand with y'all! Le Chateau is a leading Canadian fashion company, founded in 1959 in Montreal. Since I grew up in Maine, I grew up spending long weekend vacations throughout the years in Quebec City and Montreal. I first discovered Le Chateau during a Quebec City vacation many years ago, and I still have some jewelry that I purchased there on that trip! My mom and I were in Montreal the summer between my junior and senior years of high school, and I found my senior year homecoming dress at a Le Chateau store in the city! It was was the cuteset LBD, and one of my favorite dresses that I ever wore to a high school dance. I ended up taking it with me to college, and re-wearing it for a formal during my freshman year, and then a few years later on giving it to a roommate for her to wear for a formal! The dress held up incredibly well, and still looked just as cute as the day my mom and I took it home from Montreal.

    Today Le Chateau operates over 200 stores throughout Canada, a successful e-commerce website, and a handful of stores internationally. When I learned that my first job in radio would be taking me to Vermont, one thing that I was really excited for was being close to Canada again, and actually a lot closer than I was when I lived in Maine! I've made several Montreal day trips since I moved here, and it's been so much fun to rediscover the fun of shopping at Le Chateau. All of their clothing, accessories and shoes are very fashion forward, chic, and many exude pieces exude business casual elegance. I think of course that Le Chateau's best items are their gorgeous dresses! As you can see from today's photos, I now have a new Le Chateau LBD happily in my closet, and I already can't wait to wear it again.

      The best news for those of y'all who don't live as close to the Canadian border as I do- Le Chateau has a US version of their website! That means that you too can enjoy all of their cute styles from the convenience of ordering online. (The only downside which I will note is that at this time, express shipping isn't an option for US orders. My order came in just over a week!) Definitely check out their website if you're looking for a cute holiday party or formal dress for an upcoming occasion. I've linked some favorites below:

      Thanks so much for reading! Since today is Throwback Thursday, here's a TBT to my old favorite Le Chateau LBD. 😊

       God Bless,

HUGE Graduation Dress Round Up!

     At this time last year, I was still having lots of trouble finding my college graduation dress. I wanted something that would be fun yet tasteful, and that would reflect my sense of style and personality, yet also be appropriate for the ceremony and to wear with my robe. As someone who is quite a dress lover in general, I had no idea that finding a dress for the occasion of graduation would be so hard! After trying on tons of dresses in many stores and also browsing for weeks on end online, I finally picked out a dress, and I remember it felt like such a huge weight had been lifted off my shoulders.

     Oddly enough- the search for a graduation dress was not going any easier this year when I began browsing a couple months ago for a dress for my broadcasting school graduation ceremony, which will be in late May! I knew that I'd had so much trouble last year that I wanted to start extra early this time around... and similarly enough I was still having trouble finding anything that felt perfect! Fortunately for me this time around- thanks to finding a job out of state and my big move, I actually won't be attending my broadcasting school graduation ceremony in person, so I can re-wear last year's graduation dress when I Facetime in... or wear my pajamas... no one will know! 😉

     Anyways, I wanted to help out all of my fellow graduation seniors (both high school and college!) who might read my blog with today's post, to hopefully make the graduation dress shopping process easier than it has been for me! I found lots of different dresses in both varying styles and price points, so there is something here for everyone! And if you aren't a grad yourself this year or if those days are behind you, then perhaps you have a graduation or other special spring event like a recital or shower to attend, and you might still be in need of a pretty spring dress!

This post contains affiliate links. Thank you for supporting Southern Belle in Training.

     If you're not looking to break the bank with your graduation dress- it's totally possible! These dresses are all super cute and perfect for graduation or any other spring celebration, and the best part is that they're all under $25! I seriously cannot believe that the yellow scalloped dress is only $10.

     I am a huge fan of the Lilly Pulitzer brand, and to me wearing a Lilly dress for a special occasion makes the occasion that much sweeter. 😉 If you're wanting to splurge a little more, I highly recommend something by Lilly Pulitzer! All Lilly dresses are perfect for springtime, so gorgeous, and the Lilly brand is timeless so you'll be able to re-wear the dress time and time again. (I love wearing my older Lilly pieces just as much as new ones!) I did end up choosing a Lilly dress for my college graduation last year- and it was absolutely perfect.

     And if you're looking for a dress that is a little bit more of an investment piece than an under $25 bargain steal, but might not have as preppy of a look as a Lilly dress (or quite as much of a price tag!)- don't worry, I have you covered too! Here are some of my other favorite picks that would also be perfect for graduation. From lace to bold stripes to fun florals- all the trends are here!

      Here is a look at my college senior photos and the Lilly dress that I ended up choosing! To see more of my senior photos- check out this blog post!

     If you've already graduated high school and college- did you find graduation dress shopping hard as I did? Did you eventually find the perfect dress! Share with me in the comments! And congrats again to all my graduating senior readers- all of your hard work has paid off!

     God Bless,

MAINE TRAVEL GUIDE: Visiting the Kennebunks in the Winter.

     This is a post that is probably much overdue (as in, by several years) on Southern Belle in Training! It was my most recent trip home a few weeks ago that finally inspired me to write it, and I'm so glad that I finally was able to put something together.

     If you're a newer reader friend around the blog, let me fill you in a little bit. I've called North Carolina home since I moved here for college in Fall 2012, but whether I like to admit it or not- I'm a native Mainer! This is how my blog got its name- "Southern Belle" is for me living in NC now and having an affinity for all things Southern, and "in Training" comes from the fact that I'm from Maine. My parents and most of my mom's side of the family still live in Maine, as do my friends from high school.

     I'm from Kennebunk, Maine, which is a coastal town in the Southern part of the state. Kennebunk is often considered the same thing as Kennebunkport, which is a big New England tourist destination. Fun fact: they are actually two separate (but neighboring towns) towns! Kennebunkport is the bigger vacation destination, and has more of the hotels and bed and breakfasts. It's also the summer home to former President George Bush and his wife Barbara. Kennebunk is the more residential town, and something surprising is that more of the public beaches are located in Kennebunk as well! Although I'm from Kennebunk, I've spent my fair share of time in Kennebunkport as well. I worked in retail at a small store in Kennebunkport for the three summers that I went home in college. (I'm actually still close with many of my older coworkers from there!).

On the rock jetty at Colony Beach in Kennebunkport {Coat // similar beanie}

   In Summer 2015, the last full summer that I spent in Maine, I did a post series here on the blog called "Southern Belle in the 'Bunk." I took my outfit pictures over May and June of that summer at really unique and what I thought were naturally beautiful locations around my hometown, as a way to celebrate what where I'm from meant to me. Plus- it allowed me to get out of my comfort zone a bit in picking locations for blog photos! (You can find all of the posts by clicking the Southern Belle in the 'Bunk label on my blog's sidebar.) But surprisingly, I've never actually done an actual "travel guide" blog post for my hometown area.

     I realized in 2016 how many bloggers were taking vacations to the area that I call home. I had so much fun seeing Instagram photos and reading blog posts and recognizing all of the locations in different people's photos! It made me realize though that it was much overdue to write more about where I'm from, and not just shoot outfit photos there. ;-)

    While Maine is more traditionally thought of as a summer vacation destination, it can be a great place to take a little trip to if you're looking for a little taste of a New England winter experience. Without further ado, my travel guide:

{Dock Square Christmas Tree, Kennebunkport}

To Do:

My number one tip for visiting Maine in the winter season is below:

    Visit the Kennebunks during Christmas Prelude: Christmas Prelude is a special celebration that runs for two weekends each year in early December. All of the hotels, shops and restaurants in Kennebunkport all get completely decked out the celebrate the beginning of the holiday season, and it really is a magical time to be in the area! The main event is the lighting of the Dock Square tree (pictured above - it stays up into January). There is caroling in the streets with local choirs, special events open to the public at many of the hotels, and just a feeling of holiday magic throughout the town. I only made it home for Prelude once in my four years of college - usually my final exams ended too late in December for me to make it home. I wasn't able to make it this year either- but I'm hoping that I can in a future year soon!

And if you're interested in visiting Maine in other parts of the winter (of which you still have many months to choose from), here are some other activities:

     Walk on the beach: There is nothing quite like Maine beaches. While my heart will still always long for beaches with tropical ocean temperatures and palm trees, Maine beaches are truly one of a kind and I do love them as well. They're naturally beautiful and have a rugged feel to them, and very few of them are built up. Many are more rocky than sandy, but Southern Maine especially does have it's share of sandy beaches also.
In the summer, most of Maine's beaches have permitted parking, and they're also often overcrowded between both locals and tourists who are trying to make the most of the short summer season. Winter really is the time to enjoy the beach for all that it is! While it is way too cold for any sort of summer activities, there is really nothing like a long winter beach walk. And parking (at least in the Kennebunk beaches) is free from mid-September through I believe mid-June, so that definitely covers the winter months. My favorite beach Kennebunk beach is Gooches Beach, and my favorite Kennebunkport beach is Colony Beach. Both beaches have a rock jetty that visitors can walk out on - it's a great way to really experience the ocean and waves.

     Shop in Kennebunkport: Kennebunkport has the most charming area of little shops, called Dock Square. While the area certainly hits its peak in the summer months, most of the stores do stay open year round (or at least through Christmas Prelude - see above!). You can find just about anything in Kennebunkport: typical touristy items,  coffee shops, art galleries, jewelry and clothing stores, and plenty of made-in-Maine gift shops, with unique items that you won't find anywhere else! One of my favorite discount jewelry stores called The Best of Everything, which is kind of like a local version of Charming Charlie, is located just over the bridge from Dock Square on the Kennebunk side (there is a river and bridge separating the two towns). Some of the Dock Square stores do close during weekdays in the winter, but a good amount of them do stay open during weekday weekends, even into January and February.

     Cross Country Skiing at Harris Farms: This activity is actually located about 30 mins away from Kennebunk, but if you're in Maine when there is enough snow on the ground then I promise that this is something you won't regret trying your hand at! This was one of my favorite winter activities growing up, and I have so many fond memories of my mom and I going to do this each year. Sadly I haven't made it out to do this on any recent winter trips home to Maine, but I know it will happen again one of these years.
Harris Farms is dairy farm that's located in the nearby town of Dayton, and they offer cross country skiing (and ski rentals) all over their beautiful trails and acreage in the winter months. A lot of Mainers are big down-hill skiiers- my family and I aren't, but I do very much love cross country skiing. The trails and Harris Farms are so beautiful, and it's a great workout!

{The Kennebunkport Inn}

Stay:

     I have to preface this part of the travel guide by saying that I personally have never stayed at any of these hotels! Since I am from this area, I've never actually stayed at any of the hotels in the Kennebunks. But I have attended many functions at some of these hotels over the years,  eaten in their restaurants, and know people who work for them. And know people who have stayed at them! So hopefully that is almost as good? ;-)

     If you're visiting for Christmas Prelude: Kennebunkport's two largest hotels, The Colony and The Nonantum, are both great choices for visiting the area. They're both historic properties and have great restaurants. The Nonantum is located right on the river and is less than a mile from the ocean, and The Colony has ocean views. Both of high school proms were held at The Nonantum, and one of my cousin's weddings! And one of my best friends from Maine works for The Colony. Both of these hotels do close after the Christmas Prelude season though, so they aren't open for the whole season.

     If you're visiting later in the winter: I would recommend the Kennebunkport Inn (pictured above)! This beautiful and quaint inn is located right in the center of Dock Square, so it is in walking distance to most shopping and restaurants. They also have a great restaurant in the inn called One Dock. They're open year-round.

{Colony Beach in Kennebunkport}

Eat:

     Pedro's: This is my FAVORITE Mexican restaurant of all-time. I have yet to find better tacos than at Pedro's. I swear. You probably wouldn't expect to visit the coast of Maine and find great Mexican food, but I promise that it's here! Fun fact: Pedro's doesn't always have the best service. I've actually had to call and complain to their management before about some really bad service that I've had while eating there. Normally I don't return to restaurants where I receive bad service.... BUT THESE TACOS. Y'ALL. Order a large plate of Mexican Street tacos and you will not be disappointed.

     Federal Jack's: This is a restaurant and brewery, and it's a continued favorite spot for my high school friends to meet up at every now and then. They have a pretty extensive menu, and their restaurant is located right on the river, so the views aren't anything to complain about. In the summer their parking is a nightmare, but in the off-season it isn't usually that bad. They serve freshly brewed Shipyard beers, and one of my favorite beers of all time is a blueberry ale. I learned last year that you can actually find it at Trader Joe's stores nationwide- so sometimes I treat myself to that here in Charlotte for a little taste of home!

     Mornings in Paris: This is a little French bakery that opened in Kennebunk (very close to Kennebunkport) about four or five years ago. It's a great spot to meet up with friends at when I am home for visits now. The pastries are decent, but the best things to get there are beverages. They have several types of specialty coffee drinks and lattes, but my two favorites are the Mexican hot chocolate in the winter months, and the lavender iced tea in the summer months.

    And there you go! My guide to visiting my little neck of the (Northern) woods in the winter months. Have you visited Maine or the Kennebunks before? Are you planning any cold-weather winter vacations for this year?

The story behind my email address...

     This is a blog post that I have been wanting to write for over a year! The idea has been saved in my "blog posts for rainy days" section of both my brain and my blog planner. I have a few larger posts that I am currently drafting for the coming weeks (including a new travel guide post and some room tours for my new apartment!), but while those posts are in progress I still wanted to have something up for y'all today. Two of my favorite fashion bloggers, Katey McFarlan and Haley Shepard, both published posts this week which discussed more of the behind-the-scenes aspects of blogging. Both of these women are full-time bloggers, and I was just in awe after reading their posts at how dedicated they are to creating amazing content and running their businesses! Katey's post especially stressed the importance of consistency in blog content. Since the larger posts that I'm working on won't be ready just yet, today seemed like the perfect day to share this post idea that's been floating around for awhile!

      Having active social media accounts is a huge part of being a blogger. I use Instagram and Snapchat the most frequently, and my username on these accounts is @miss_alk. (This is also the name that I sign all of my blog posts with... for an explanation behind that, see this blog post!) My Pinterest username is also @miss_alk. Some of you might have noticed though that both my Twitter account and my blog's email address are @rainbowflash94/rainbowflash94@yahoo.com... say what? That is definitely not related to @miss_alk, or to my blog's name! There is definitely a story behind the rainbowflash94, and without further ado, here it is:

     In Winter 2004, I was 10 years old, and desperately trying to think of the *coolest* email address possible. For a 10 year old girl in the early 2000s, having a basic email address with just my name simply wasn't an option! (Y'all remember the days and know what types of email address I'm talking about!) My passions at this time in my life were figure skating, dancing, and reading, but I couldn't think of anything that was cool enough, sounded right, or wasn't already taken, that could incorporate these things that I liked.

     Then my mom thought of the perfect idea, "rainbow flash". Here is where the name comes from: a few days after I was born when my parents were bringing me home from the hospital, back in Maine in September 1994, during my very first car ride my mom saw a rainbow and a flash of lightening collide. She said it was a scene that she will never forget! (Years later, she saw a photography piece by a Maine artist who had seen the same sight that day and was able to capture it on camera!)

    I thought that rainbowflash was perfect, and I added the number 94, for my birth year, to the end of it. Hence my very first email address!

      What differs this email from many of the those in the early 2000s though is that I've never stopped using it. My inbox today has over 35,000 emails. Yes, 35,000! This email address has been with me through everything: middle school, high school and college! It's received some of the best and worst messages of my life. One of the funniest things to think about are the countless emails that I used to send with my middle school crush since this was before I had a Facebook account... technically those emails are all still buried in there somewhere!

      I've been lucky enough to never experience any sort of major email hack in the 12 years that I've had the account, so I never saw a need to stop using it. When I had my personal writing blog in high school, I developed a separate gmail account for that blog. It started becoming more of a chore to check a second email account though, so when I started this blog a few years ago I knew that I wanted to launch it under my personal email. Yes, it's true that my email account for this blog might not end with @southernbelleintraining.com, or have my blog's name in the title. But the story behind the name means a lot to me, and what means even more to me is how long it has been with me for!  I started my Twitter account when I was in high school, way before this blog was created, so my Twitter was made under the name @rainbowflash94. When I started other social media accounts in college after my blog was created, it made more sense to use @miss_alk since that is the name that I signed my blog posts with, and it's a lot shorter!

     So there is your random post from me for the week! :-) Do any of you still use your childhood email addresses?

     Stay tuned next week for lots of new posts, and this weekend I'll try and put a post together with some 4th of July sale deals! Have a great holiday weekend everyone!

Midweek Ramblings + Recent Purchases.

{Follow me on Instagram and Snapchat @miss_alk!}

Ramblings:

  • Credit Card Decisions: Something on my Winter Break to-do list was to start applications for my first credit card- and I'm feeling a little overwhelmed! First, I have to say that I am thankful for the fact that one of my parents' rules with me has always been to let financial things come in "steps." Unlike some of my friends, they never let me open a debit card in high school, and said that was a privilege to come when I was living on my own in college. Similarly with a credit card, they said that I had college to manage using a debit card wisely, and could get a credit card near the end of school. Looking back on it, I think that both of these things were excellent on their part- everything in good time! But now that the time has come for a credit card, I have no idea what to apply for! The one that I have been looking most closely at is the Discover IT card with cash back rewards (it also has no annual fee and no foreign transaction fees apparently!), but I haven't made any decisions yet. How was applying for your first credit card? What card(s) do you love and trust?
  • Boston at Christmas: Last Thursday, my dad and I took a day trip to see one of our favorite cities all decked out for the holiday season! I wrote a recap of our day in the city and shared the blog post on Saturday- check it out if you haven't yet!
  • High school was a long time ago: On Saturday night, I went out for drinks with a few of my friends from high school. Few social events that I've ever participated in have ever made me feel so old!! Since when did I become such an "adult" that I can get alcoholic beverages with the same people that I used to eat lunch in the cafeteria with?! Haha. I haven't had a chance to do too many social things since I've been home this past week, so this was a really nice treat to catch up with a few people! It's always fun to learn what everyone is up to in college, and now also to discuss what future plans are for after graduation in the spring!
  • This song: has been stuck in my head all week. :-) The irony about this song is that a friend of mine from college loved this band long before they were being played on the airwaves, and always used to tell me about them and how great their music was. Now one of their songs has gone mainstream, and I see why she has been obsessed for so long- ha!

Purchases:
  • I don't do a lot of my shopping in Maine anymore- the quality of our mall (yes- mall, not malls. #MaineProbs) and other stores just isn't the same as Charlotte, and I've also gotten more into online shopping this year since I'm obsessed with Ebates (more on that at the bottom of this post! But I did manage to do some shopping when I was in Boston last week and also have found a couple goodies since I've been home.
  • I found the most gorgeous strappy pumps on incredible sale here in Maine this week! They are from one of my favorite shoe companies. (They are sold out online, but these are similar!) These will carry me through things in the upcoming semester like chapter meetings or presentations, and post-graduation I know I'll get lots of use out of them in my future job!
  • I picked up the cutest new poncho sweater at this favorite store of mine while in Boston last week! Who else is totally obsessed with ponchos for this season?
  • Last year- one of my favorite Christmas gifts was getting this fun photo-a-day calendar for 2015. It became such a hit among my college friends that I would give away the funniest pages to all of my friends on campus! I was going to buy the same calendar again for 2016, but then I found this one (based off of another favorite website of mine). I think that this photo-a-day calendar will be just as great as the one I had last year!

     As I mentioned above, I am loving this website called Ebates which assists with online shopping! It's so simple to use- you download a toolbar extension for whichever internet browser that you use on your computer, and then whenever you're making an online purchases from your favorite retailer, you just begin the shopping trip through Ebates. They then credit you a few days later with cash back on your purchase!! The cash back percentages for each store can range from 1-10%, depending on which stores are currently featured. I used Ebates for my Cyber Monday shopping, and made over $25 this year just from those purchases alone!
      I'm not being sponsored to talk about Ebates at all- just wanted y'all to know about this amazing website, especially with the after Christmas sales coming right up. You can sign up for it here! :-)

     Merry Christmas week to all of you! Thanks for reading!

Midweek Ramblings + Recent Purchases.

     Last week was my first time writing a random Wednesday post called Midweek Ramblings + Recent Purchases... where I did exactly that! I shared some rambling thoughts from the past few days, and also shared some things I had recently purchased or was thinking about purchasing soon. I realized after writing the post how much fun it was to write (and how nice it was to break up the blogging week with a post like that), so I decided to make it a "thing" here on Southern Belle in Training, because why not?!

Ramblings:

  • My upcoming schedule is scary: Y'all. I cannot WAIT to be back in Charlotte in three weeks (!!!!!!!!!) But my schedule upon arriving in my favorite place is really starting to worry and stress me out! I move back into college on August 29th, and starting Monday August 31st, I jump back into full-time college classes, interning, working part-time (I babysit at school), full-time sorority recruitment practices until the end of September, PLUS maintaining this blog, which is like a job in itself! And what about celebrating my 21st birthday, third blogiversary or catching up with all of my best friends at school!? Yikes!! I'm the type of person who likes gradual starts to new routines, and senior year will be anything but. Somehow I'll survive the month of September I hope! If anyone has any excellent time management tips- do share!
  • Selena Gomez's new song: Good For You is the name of it, and I am 150% obsessed with it. Ms. Gomez is the Queen of Everything as far as I am concerned. I've been a fan of hers since her Disney Channel days! Four years ago I had front row seats at her We Own the Night Tour, and it was one of the best nights ever. I'm still a huge fan today, and that can be evidenced by the extreme car dancing moves that I whip out whenever Good For You comes on.
  • Thinking of witty tweets: I always seem to think of the wittiest things to tweet on Twitter at one of two times: either when I'm driving, or when I'm out on the sales floor at work. I can't use my phone in either of those places. 99% of the time, I forget what the witty tweet was by the time that I can use my phone again. This is really starting to bug me! I promise y'all, I do think of funny things to write on Twitter sometimes.
  • Running into people from high school: The number one reason that I'm so ready to be out of my hometown not only for the summer, but for good, is because I am so gosh darn sick of running into rude and immature people from my high school! Some of you know as I have written in past blog posts that I really didn't have the best high school years. Much of that was due to the horrible social climate of my small public high school. Many of the people that I went to high school with haven't grown up at all, and still hold the same attitudes and grudges that they did back then. I can't even count how many people I have run into this summer, both before and after my time abroad, and how unpleasant most of the interactions were. I'm already kind of dreading my first high school reunion in a few years from now! Am I the only one who feels this way about most people from their high school?

Purchases:
  • Shoes were the name of the game for me this week! Earlier last week, I scored some adorable grey suede fringe booties at TJ Maxx! I have been looking for the perfect pair of booties for such a long time, and these little beauties will be such a great Fall transition piece. (Here a super similar pair to mine that was recently marked down for the NSale at Nordstrom!)
  • My mom also got me some new Clarks sandals this week for my last few weeks at my summer retail job. I wrote in my "Must Haves for the Retail Associate" blog post about how Clarks sandals, while not the most fashionable, are truly the most comfortable and supportive shoes for jobs that require you to be on your feet for long hours. Anyways, Clarks was having a sale for two pairs of shoes for $99, and the other pair of shoes that I got are super cute! They're black cut-out suede heels (sold-out online in black, but still available in beige!), and since they're Clarks they're absolutely the most comfortable heels. I can't wait to add these into my everyday shoe collection since they're both cute and supportive!
  • One other thing that I "purchased" was that this week I made a small donation to one of my favorite charities, Christian organization Samaritan's Purse. I don't believe in always sharing about tithing, and I think that's a very personal decision between someone and God. But sometimes reading about something can motivate someone else to do something good, so that's why I wanted to share this time. It really struck me this week that even though I have been stressed out lately- from dealing with the bed bugs that I brought back from France, my work schedule, and already worrying about school.... my life could be so much worse. I am truly so blessed! I really need to be sharing some of my blessings with others. I encourage all of you to take the time to research charities and find ones that you trust and whose missions you support, and then give to them financially! Even if you can't give a lot, a little bit counts.

     Until next week's ramblings!

Workin' On My Fitness with The Track&Field Store {Part 1!}

      When I was younger, I lived a very active lifestyle. I actually grew up as a competitive figure skater, and I took dance classes in ballet for seven or eight years (as well as trying jazz and modern dance as well) to supplement my ice skating. After 10th grade I had stopped skating, but that year instead I joined two junior varsity sports teams at my high school: volleyball and tennis. During my senior year of high school I didn't play on any sports teams, but instead I joined a local gym. I loved working out a few times a week, as well as going to Zumba classes at the gym with my girlfriends.

     But then a little thing called college happened. Over the past three years, I have been so focused on schoolwork, this blog, and work/internships (especially those that will try to benefit my hopeful future career in radio), so fitness often gets pushed to the back-burner of my life. I do try to make some small healthy decisions each day: such as this past year when I lived on the fourth floor of a dorm building, I tried to take the stairs as much as possible instead of the elevator. But still, I know that I really need to get back into a regular fitness routine this year!

     That's why I was so excited that Charlotte's brand new premier store for fitness apparel, The Track&Field Store, reached out to me about working together this fall! I honestly think that this was just the motivation that I needed to get excited about fitness for when I go back to school- sometimes things happen at just the right time. ;-)

     The Track&Field Store is Brazil's largest fitness and lifestyle brand of apparel. They are just starting to expand into the United States, and Charlotte is the home to their third (and brand new!) US store. The Charlotte location of The Track&Field Store opened in May, and is located in Charlotte's luxury mall, SouthPark Mall (one of my favorite places to shop when I am in the Queen City!). Ron and Silvia Skufca, co-owners of the The Track&Field Store's Charlotte location, said that "We know that residents in Charlotte and the surrounding area lead active lives, and look for high-quality products that fuse fashion and function together, which makes the brand a perfect fit for this region." I couldn't agree with that more!

     I will be doing a fitness style collaboration and visiting the Charlotte location of The Track&Field Store once I am back down South in a couple of months. Until then, I encourage any of my Charlotte readers to go and check out the new store!

     What types of activities do you enjoy doing to stay fit? I am hoping this Fall to start going to some of the dance based workout classes that my school's gym offers, and to also start power walking more often on the treadmill in the gym as well (running and me don't mix ;-) ).

Introducing: Southern Belle in the 'Bunk

     I am so excited to be introducing a brand new post series that I'll be sharing every Friday this summer here on the blog! I will definitely be sharing them every Friday that I am home here in Maine from now until I leave to study abroad (and the weeks that I'm home after my trip until I go back to Charlotte), and if I have enough time to get shoots in then I will hopefully have back-up posts scheduled for the four weeks that I am traveling abroad as well.

Easter Break 2015

     So to preface, even though I began blogging in high school (shout-out to my old blog Confessions of a Maine Teenager! #whataname), I didn't start Southern Belle in Training until the beginning of my freshman year of college, in September 2012. Starting this blog marked a lot of transitions for me: becoming a legal adult and turning 18 (in fact, my blogiversary is my birthday if you didn't know!), the switch from a focus on lifestyle and faith to fashion blogging, going from high school to college, and most importantly, my move from Maine to North Carolina. The last is the most important of all! So much of the content of my blog conveys my love for North Carolina and more specifically, the city of Charlotte. Not only have I now transferred to a college that's in Charlotte, but I'm also involved with The Charlotte Social, Charlotte's premiere blogging network, and several other southern/North Carolina based blogging networks and groups.

     But this summer, I'm home again, here in my little hometown of Maine. It's quite weird for me to be here for a whole summer to be honest. I do still have a couple good friends here, I enjoy my summer job, and I love living near the ocean again, but other then that it doesn't feel like there's much here for me. I can't explain it, but even though Charlotte is a city that I knew no one in a couple of years ago, it just feels like home now (read more about that in this post!).

     Yet whether I like it or not, I'm here and home for the summer, and that means that my blog is also here and home for the summer. Half of my blog's name reflects the NC side of me: the "Southern Belle" part of the name. But the other half of the name reflects my Maine roots, where I come from (the "in Training" part). This summer, I wanted to use my creative juices to come up with some sort of a special blog post series to celebrate Maine and where I came from, since this is most likely my last summer here as a full-time resident! (Even in the rare event I moved back to Maine after college, this is still my last summer here as a traditional undergrad living at home!)

     So a few nights ago, the perfect idea came to me! It began to formulate as I thought about how over the past few months, something that I have become really in-tune to when critiquing my own blog posts (and reading other fashion blogs) is the locations that bloggers use for photos. Yes- the clothing is a big part of it, but I also like to see fashion bloggers experimenting with taking their photos in beautiful places! Even when I don't have the time during the school year to be shooting all over the city I try and mix things up by taking my pictures at different pretty places around my campus. And when I do have the time on the weekends, all of Charlotte is my backdrop- the options are endless!

     Therefore the idea came to me that each Friday while I am home, I will do an outfit post shot at a different location in my town (or the neighboring town- more on that in a sec!), but have the focus on the post only be about half on my outfit, and half on the location. Yes, I have shot outfit posts at some different spots in my town before when I've been home on breaks, including at the beach. But I won't be picking spots I've already used. I'm going to be choosing very unique (yet still beautiful!) spots in town. The places that a tourist might not immediately be drawn to, but the places that I have memories at, or the places that make my town special. And in the post, I will share not only my outfit details, but why I picked the location that I'm shooting at! And I'll tell you about my memories in that location. And each week you'll learn more and more about my town, and hopefully through this more about me.

My favorite iPhone picture ever of one of our local beaches! Summer 2012

     So now- where is it in Maine that I am actually from?! (This is I suppose crucial for y'all to know for a series that is based around my town.) I realize to that I have never actually shared my hometown before on the blog!! Finally time to give away a big secret... :-)

     *Drumroll...* I am from the Kennebunk/Kennebunkport area of Southern Maine! These two cute, neighboring (and yes, they are two separate towns!), are located about 40 mins from both the New Hampshire border and also 40 mins from Portland, Maine's largest city.  They are both directly on the coast and each town has a few lovely beaches were are open to the public (which you can see one of Kennebunk's in the picture above!). Both towns are a huge tourist area, especially during the summer months.. The shop that I work in actually caters mostly to a tourist crowd! One notable attraction in the area is that the first former President Bush has one of his summer homes in Kennebunkport.

     Three interesting facts about the Kennebunks: one is that a church in downtown Kennebunk (as well as other locations around both towns) were the location for Taylor Swift's 2010 music video "Mine!" She filmed it right where I'm from. My dad actually drove me by where the filming was happening one day and we got to see her from a distance! This was back when she had her beautiful signature curly hair... I miss those days!

    Second interesting fact, during my freshman year of college (right around the time I started this blog!) my town made national news for a very disturbing scandal involving prostitution and a zumba studio... you can read more about that from here from an article by Vanity Fair!

     Third interesting fact: Kennebunkport hosts an annual pre-Christmas celebration during the first two weekends in December called Christmas Prelude. All of the stores get completely decked out, there is Christmas caroling, Christmas treats galore, and a festive town tree lighting. Our celebration makes national rankings for best small town Christmas celebrations!! I am always so sad that due to final exams I can never make it for the first weekend of Prelude anymore, but the past two years I've been able to work the second weekend of it at my job!

    So that is a little taste of my town! The first post for "Southern Belle in the 'Bunk" will be up tomorrow! It features an outfit that I packed for my internship to Louisville last week but didn't have time to shoot for while there. I can't wait to show y'all the spot that I ended up shooting at here in Kennebunk- it's just beautiful!

     I have big hopes and plans for this summer series and hope you'll all follow along!
