Wedding Wednesday: Our Wedding Playlists

When I would dream about my future wedding day when I was in high school, college and my early 20s, the number one part of the wedding day that I'd fixate on and dream about specifically was the wedding reception dance floor. I love to dance, and the thought of being on a dance floor surrounded by the love of my life and all of the people in our lives that we love seemed like heaven on earth to me! I joked to friends in the months leading up to the wedding that the one aspect of wedding planning that I was a bridezilla about was anything to do with our wedding reception playlist! God bless the poor DJ that would have to put up with me. 😉

Anyways, before I get into recapping our full wedding reception on the blog, I wanted to share a detailed blog post with our wedding playlists, for cocktail hour, dinner and of course the dance floor! Below you can read about the must-plays, the do-not plays, and even the newest songs I would've added to the playlist that didn't exist yet in November 2024. And of course I have plenty of dance floor photos to share with you too!

Wedding Wednesday: Our Wedding - Getting Ready

I'm so excited to finally start recapping my wedding day here on the blog! For my wedding day recaps, I want to kind of let the photos speak for themselves to tell the story, and not add too much writing to these posts. (Not my norm! 😉)

Ryan and I got married on November 16th, 2024 in Virginia Beach! Ryan, his dad and the groomsmen spent the morning hanging out and getting ready at his parents' house.

Myself and the bridesmaids spent the night before and the wedding day morning most beautiful beach rental home, Bayberry House by Transcendent Stays. I had the hairstylist come to Bayberry to do everyone's hair, and my mom and Ryan's mom came over as well for their hair appointments. Everyone did their own makeup, which I was so pleased with! My mom and I then got a few photos together in my dress, and then I did first looks with my bridal party and my dad. (Only my mom and Ryan's mom had seen my dress prior to the wedding day.)

Without further ado- here are the photos of getting ready and first looks (with my bridal party and my dad)!

Wedding Wednesday: My Wedding Dress(es)

Before I start sharing the photo recaps of our wedding ceremony and reception,  I thought that my wedding dress deserved a detailed blog post of its own! I first wrote about my wedding dress shortly after I purchased it last winter. But that entire post was written without any photos of the dress, since the wedding hadn't happened yet! And then a second dress (reception dress) came into the picture as well. Basically, I have a lot to catch you up on dress-wise, and it seemed right to do that before starting wedding day recaps! 😊

Wedding Wednesday: Our Rehearsal + Welcome Party

Welcome back to Wedding Wednesday! Before I get into sharing photo recap posts of the wedding day itself, I wanted to recap the day before the wedding with you.

Truth be told, this was actually my favorite day of the wedding weekend! Yes, I really did enjoy the day before my wedding just a little more than my wedding day. I know that probably sounds crazy! But let me tell you, there was just something so exciting and electric about the great anticipation I had for my wedding day on the day before. It felt like my childhood excitement and anticipation on Christmas Eve for Santa to arrive... except times 100 on the excitement scale. 😊 Truly a certain type of anticipatory high that I've never experienced before, and I'm not sure I ever will again!

And as far as my favorite part of the day before our wedding, that would definitely go to our wedding welcome party on Friday evening! If anything, I hope this blog post might convince any brides-to-be reading that wedding welcome parties are the best, and every couple should have one if they're able to!

Now without further ado, let's get into recapping Friday, November 15th, 2024: the day before our wedding!

TRAVEL GUIDE: Our Honeymoon at Sandals Royal Barbados

I'm so excited to share a recap of our wonderful honeymoon! Ryan and I went to Barbados the week after our wedding for five nights. Neither of us had been to Barbados or stayed at a Sandals Resort before. We ended up really enjoying both the resort and the island, and I have the most fond memories from this special trip.

Wedding Wednesday: My Bachelorette Party!

I have enjoyed writing all of the Wedding Wednesday blog posts that you've seen so far, but this truly might be one of the ones that I was most excited about. It's time to recap my bachelorette party! Instead of an extravagant multi-day trip, I opted to just have one night of festivities that wasn't too far away from home (Virginia Beach). I have no regrets about doing things this way, and I've been looking so forward to recapping it all here!

We are ENGAGED!!!!!

I cannot believe I get to share the most happy news of my life with you on the blog today! It did not feel real typing out the title for this blog post. (Yes, five exclamation points in the title were 100% necessary!)

Radio 101: Music Row Live During CMA Week in Nashville - 2021 Recap

Earlier this month, I had the work opportunity of a lifetime. My co-host, my boss and I traveled to the home of country music, Nashville Tennesee, to broadcast live from Sharla McCoy's Music Row Live event during CMA Awards Week. I documented the trip in real-time on my Instagram Stories, but I've been wanting to share a more in-depth recap of everything here on the blog.  I've been working full-time in radio for four and a half years now, but this was the first work trip that I've ever had the chance to go on. And what a first trip it was!

NYFW 2019: Why I Decided To Go + Preview My Outfits!

Happy Tuesday! It's the first Tuesday of February, which means time to debut my latest Tuesday blog post series. I originally shared that this month's series would be all about routines (fitness routine, daily makeup routine, etc), BUT at the last minute I decided to shift those posts over to March! I'm headed to New York Fashion Week (NYFW) this month, and it'll be the first time I'm officially getting to attend! In addition to recapping the outfits that I will be wearing and the shows and events that Gentry and I are attending, I wanted to share more "behind the scenes" content with y'all as well, which is what I'll be sharing on Tuesdays this month! To kick things off today, I'm sharing why I decided to go in the first place, and a special preview of a few of the outfits you'll catch me sporting!

The (Free) Christmas Gift You Can Give Me!

Merry Christmas friends! Hoping you're enjoying today with family, friends and loved ones, and that it is a relaxing holiday. If you do have to work today, I'm hoping it will be an easy day for you! May we all take time to reflect on the miracle of Jesus's birth, and how special this season is.

I'm writing this to you live from my layover in NYC. don't usually do a blog post on Christmas, but tomorrow is a very exciting day for me, and I have a request for y'all! Tomorrow at 5 am, I begin my dream job as a morning radio host. Hence why I have to fly back to Virginia on Christmas Day! (If you missed my new job announcement- read it here!)

It would be my greatest joy tomorrow if you could celebrate the next chapter of my career with me by listening to my first show on the new station! The Z 95.1 Morning Show with Marc and Anna Lise (I spell my name slightly differently for the radio. 😊) will be live on-air M-F, from 5-10 am EST, and tomorrow is the first day! If you live in Charlottesville area, you can listen live to Z 95.1 on your radio. If you're out of town/state/country, you can listen a few different ways:
  1. Directly on the Z websiteThere is a streaming player right on our website- perfect to listen to from your desktop!
  2. Mobile apps: The TuneIn app allows you to stream live radio from anywhere! Just search Z 95.1.
  3. Amazon Alexa: Ask Alexa to play WQMZ Z 95.1, and she will play the station for you.

If you would tune in at any point in the show tomorrow and send me a photo of how you're listening (car, computer, phone, etc), that would mean the WORLD to me, and be the ultimate (free) belated Christmas gift!! I will share photos of everyone listening and where they are listening from on my Instagram stories tomorrow. You can let me know you're listening any way- email me, DM me on Instagram, tweet me, text me (if you have my number!)... whatever works for you!

I have been blogging here at Southern Belle in Training for over six years now, and all of you longtime readers truly feel like dear friends (and some of you have even become real life friends!). For the most part, I've kept my radio career and blog pretty separate over the past couple years, but with the new show I hope to integrate the two together a little more. If you could let me know that you're listening to the first show tomorrow, that would be a great way to start!

Christmas blessings to you! Here's to an amazing last week of 2019.

      God Bless,

      xoxo Annaliese

Life Update: I'M A MORNING RADIO CO-HOST!!!!

Join me today in celebrating some very incredible and unexpected career news! 😊I'm so excited to finally be able to share this big news on my blog!

Oh my goodness, I don't even know where to begin!! So much excitement to share with y'all today. Let's just get big news out of the way first: December 26th, the day after Christmas, will be the first day that I am an official morning radio co-host for a brand new morning show in Charlottesville! Finally getting to type that out on the blog and share my news with all family and friends feels UNREAL! I'm also switching radio stations, and I'll now be working for a station with a much bigger signal and presence in the area, so this is a big move! (By move, I mean only a move across the hall! My company owns six Charlottesville radio stations, all housed in the same building.) Now here comes the longer version of the story, and a bit about why this promotion is such an unexpected dream come true!

Working in radio was my dream since I was just seven years old, but my dream of morning radio began a little more recently. I actually wanted to be a syndicated night show host when I was growing up! I wanted to be just like popular radio host Delilah, whose show is played on AC and light rock station across the country. I loved Delilah so much that I named my cat after her! Anyways, almost two years ago in January 2017, I began a morning radio internship that I needed to graduate from broadcasting school. I interned from January-March 2017 for The MRL Show in Charlotte. Getting to be around morning radio firsthand and watch all of the creative components come together to make a great show was amazing to me. That experience actually changed my mind about my career goal- and my new dream was to be a morning radio co-host! I didn't mind the crazy early mornings... in my mind it seemed worth it to me to be apart of people's morning and wake them up with a smile on their face.

While I worked in Vermont last year, I had a few opportunities to be a fill-in on the Star 92.9 morning show when one of the co-hosts took vacation (I usually worked for Star on the weekends, and I worked for a different station weekdays). Star was a Hot AC station, AC standing for Adult Contemporary. AC which means that they played a nice variety of pop music, from the 90s, 2000s, and some current pop hits (the fact they did play a lot of current music is why they were called a Hot AC station and not just AC!). Anyways, I loved getting to fill-in a few times on the Star morning show. This was my favorite opportunity that I had while working in Vermont! It just solidified my dream of morning radio even more.

Being on a morning show is the most competitive job to get in radio. Since I was still pretty fresh out of undergrad and broadcasting school when I was in Vermont, I set a goal for myself to be working on mornings 10 years after I finished broadcasting school, which would be 2027! Ideally, I wanted it to happen before I turned 30, but that was still years away. That's why after being in Virginia for less than a year, and still being less than two years into working full-time in radio, I am in absolute shock that this DREAM HAS COME TRUE!!

As I wrote above, I will be moving stations for my new job. It's common for companies to own several radio stations in a city, so I'm literally moving across the hall from 92.7 C-Ville Country to Z 95.1! 95.1 is a heritage station, which means that it's a radio station that has been on-air for decades. The two stations that I've previously worked for (both in Vermont and Virginia) were much newer stations, so to move to a heritage radio station is even more exciting with this big news! Z 95.1 is an AC station, similar to Star 92.9 was. I am just thrilled to be working for a station that plays a fair amount of 80s and 90s pop, as y'all know that I adore my throwback music! The best part of all is that I have a wonderful co-host to help share the show responsibilities and make being on-air more fun! My new co-host Marc was already one of my favorite coworkers, and now we get to work very closely together which is just fantastic. I love the whole Z 95.1 team- my new boss and coworkers are just amazing and hardworking people.

I will also still do one short prerecorded midday show on 92.7, which is the country station I have been working for since I moved here! 92.7 has a new station manager (radio term for manager is Program Director, or PD!) who is great, so I'm happy that I can still be an active force in the radio station that originally brought me to Virginia.

I shared on the blog in October that at the end of this summer, I thought that work was going to transfer me to other stations that our parent company owns in a more rural part of Virginia. The couple months where that was going on was one of the hardest things I have ever dealt with. Radio is my dream, but I had just started feeling very settled and at-home in Charlottesville, and I couldn't abandon that feeling to potentially move yet again. It was scary, as I didn't know what would happen with my job! Amazingly, everything worked out better than I could have ever imagined. God is so good! I know this new career opportunity is directly from Him.

If you would like to listen to the new morning show, you can from anywhere that you live thanks to modern technology!! Marc and I will be on-air M-F from 5 am to 10 am EST. Here are a few ways you can listen if you don't live in Charlottesville:

  1. Directly on the Z website: There is a streaming player right on our website- perfect to listen to from your desktop!
  2. Mobile apps: The TuneIn app allows you to stream live radio from anywhere! Just search Z 95.1.
  3. Amazon Alexa: Ask Alexa to play WQMZ Z 95.1, and she will play the station for you.

I can't wait for December 26th, this wonderful news is a better Christmas gift than I could have ever asked for! Thank you for sharing the happiness with me in today's blog post. With the new job and new year approaching, I finally want to start doing more Radio 101 posts again! I'll definitely have lots to write about. 😊(ALSO- I did a pajama themed photoshoot for this announcement since I'll literally be waking people up for my job from now on!! I love the picture that Delilah is in- her little facial expressions crack me up!)

DC TRAVEL GUIDE: Cherry Blossoms - How + When to See Them!

Sharing all the details today about one of the best things I've ever crossed off my US travel bucket list! I knew that I'd love seeing the cherry blossoms in bloom in Washington DC, but I had not idea just how much I'd love it.

I can't remember exactly when I started to become obsessed with the idea of visiting DC in early spring 2018 to see the cherry blossoms. I'm guessing that it was around late fall or the holidays in 2017... aka right around the time that the temperatures dropped drastically in Vermont, and all things SPRING related were on my mind 24/7. A trip to DC when the famous cherry blossoms were in bloom seemed about as perfectly spring of a destination as I could envision! My friend Mercedes works and lives in DC, and I knew that a weekend trip to see her in early April could be doable. All winter long I was browsing flights from Vermont to DC. As I've mentioned before on the blog, the Burlington airport is insanely expensive to fly anywhere, so by early February I still hadn't bought a flight and I was hoping the ticket prices might drop at the last minute. Good news came my way in mid-February when I received the offer for my new job in Charlottesville, VA! Charlottesville is only two hours from DC, so it solidified the fact that my cherry blossom sighting dream would come true, and sans expensive flight from Vermont!

I am seriously 110% hyped up from this past week's trip and I'm convinced that Washington DC is actually a magical place when the cherry blossom trees are blooming. I hope this blog post, a.) provides you with helpful information about where and when to see the cherry blossoms in DC for yourself, and b.) convinces you that if you haven't seen them before, you NEED to make this happen in 2019 or 2020! 😉(I will also be writing a regular weekend travel guide to DC! Today's post just focuses on the cherry blossoms part of the trip.)

CHERRY BLOSSOM FAQ:

WHEN CAN YOU VISIT THE CHERRY BLOSSOMS IN DC? This year's annual Cherry Blossom Festival in DC runs from March 17-April 15th 2018. Peak bloom week for the blossoms can run anywhere in the dates of the annual festival, and I started tracking predictions for peak blooms a few weeks ago. (It felt like a repeat of when I tracked Vermont's peak foliage week in the fall!) Originally, it was predicted that the trees would blossom early this year, due to a mild February. Then DC (and much of the South- Charlottesville included!) received some surprising snow on the first day of spring, which obviously set the cherry blossoms back again. Their new predicted peak week was near the end of the festival, but the trees changed their minds again, and Easter Weekend ended up being Stage 5 for blossoms (which means right before peak!) - so a great time to be in DC and seeing them when I did!! I really lucked out with the timing of my trip. I will say- Easter is my favorite holiday, so I did think it was especially magical to see them on Easter Sunday!

IS IT FREE TO SEE THE CHERRY BLOSSOMS? YESSS!! How amazing is that?! I was blown away in DC by how many amazing things there are to do that are completely free. Visiting the cherry blossoms at both locations that I'm sharing in today's blog post is absolutely free! Of course, transportation to said locations isn't, but you have a plethora of options for that; Metro, Uber/Lyft, Hop-On-Hop-Off busses, cabs, driving... etc!

WHAT ARE THE EVENTS FOR THE NATIONAL CHERRY BLOSSOM FESTIVAL? DC loves their blossoms so much that there is a month long festival with all sorts of fun events and activities! Some are free and some require tickets. Mercedes and I actually didn't attend any of the festival events- we found there was more than enough to enjoy just by seeing the cherry blossoms, photographing them and taking in the sights! But if you do want to attend events related to the blossoms, there are lots to choose from throughout the month. The National Cherry Blossom Festival official website is your best resource with their calendar of events!

Cherry Blossoms at The National Arboretum:

The Tidal Basin is the famous spot to see the cherry blossoms in DC, but there are lots of "hidden spots" to catch the blooming trees throughout the city as well! The National Arboretum is one of them, and Mercedes and I were excited to check it out on Saturday in the late morning. Our Uber driver ended up dropping us off kind of at a back entrance to the Arboretum, so it was a little weird when we showed up... but we just started walking and then soon found ourselves amongst stunning blooms! The National Arboretum has all different traditional gardens and tree gardens. There is a self-guided cherry blossom tour with different varieties of blossoms all throughout the Arboretum. Another BIG highlight of coming here was getting to see the Holly and Magnolia collections. I felt like I was in a Southern dream garden... these trees were so beautiful that they literally look my breath away! After getting our fill of blossoming trees, Mercedes and I also checked out the National Herb Garden and the famous columns that the Arboretum is home to. Out of all the things we saw there- I think the magnolias were my favorite!

Cherry Blossoms at the Tidal Basin:

This is the iconic place to see DC in bloom!! Most of the of the depictions of the cherry blossoms promoting the festival in art or photography are normally depicted at the Tidal Basin. Mercedes and I headed there on Easter Sunday morning, hoping that it would be slightly less busy that morning due to the holiday. It was still pretty crazy! A much different experience than seeing the trees in the peace and quiet at the National Arboretum. But still absolutely incredible. Despite having lots of other tourists around, we were still able to get some amazing shots. We walked almost the entire length of the Tidal Basin and checked at the Jefferson Monument, and it was about a 2.5 mile walk. Parking is limited near here the Tidal Basin during the National Cherry Blossom Festival - Mercedes lucked out finding a parking spot after we drove around a couple times. I'd recommend taking an Uber or other transportation method if you visit on a weekend like we did!

Thanks so much for reading my DC Cherry Blossoms Travel Guide! Have you visited DC in March/April before to see these beauties in person?

I can't wait to share more about my weekend in DC soon - and hopefully get back there soon! 😊

     God Bless,

     xoxo Annaliese

Italy's Hidden Gem: The Amazing Colors of Burano.

Over the past four and a half years of blogging, there's been a lot of blog posts that I've been excited to share with y'all. (Expanding on that - if I'm not excited to share a post, why even share it right?) But out of the hundreds of blog posts.... this might really be the one I've been MOST excited to share! These pictures were taken in a place that can only be described as an Instagrammer's ultimate dream come true.

Photography by my mom 😊

This post contains affiliate links. Thank you for supporting Southern Belle in Training.

I consider myself to be a self proclaimed geography nerd, so I was SHOCKED upon beginning our tour to learn that I didn't actually know where in Italy the island of Burano was! I had heard of this colorful little place before, but I'd always thought it was in the Amalfi Coast, near Capri. That is the one region of Italy that our tour didn't venture near, so I just assumed this wouldn't be a place I'd get to visit on this trip to Europe. Imagine my surprise to learn that Burano is actually an island off of the main islands of the city of Venice in northeastern Italy, and was easily accessible as a day trip from Venice. And Venice was the last stop on our tour! Burano itself is a small island with few restaurants and hotels, so most tourists opt to stay in Venice and make a day trip out like our tour group did.

Our tour guide organized a day trip excursion to Burano, where we traveled by boat to the island, and then our entire group had a late lunch of local seafood cuisine at a restaurant there. We only had a couple hours in Burano, and unfortunately most of the time seemed to be taken up in the restaurant! I asked my mom if we could cut out of the lunch a little bit early so that we would have more time to explore. Burano and its beautiful colored buildings are a once in a lifetime experience, and I didn't want to spend the majority of my time there in a restaurant.

We had maybe 20 minutes to ourselves to explore, and we walked down one of the first streets that we came upon, which is where these photos were taken. As we walked down the sidewalk, following the canal, I was so in awe of how beautiful each house was! Each one became more beautiful and vibrant in color than the last! We didn't have much time at all, but I was able to get a few outfit pictures, and then my mom and I both took the rest of the time to take scenic shots.

.... I mean, how BEAUTIFUL?! Below, I had some fun playing with the colors and edits on a few of my Burano photos.

Despite the fact that our time in Burano was way too short, and that it was a bit cold and cloudy on our day there, this was by far the highlight of my time in Italy! I didn't think anything could beat visiting the spots from the Lizzie McGuire movie... but I guess I was wrong! I only hope that I'll be lucky enough to return to Burano someday!

Thank you so much for following along with all of my Italy blog posts! I feel so blessed and lucky to have gone on such a memorable adventure before moving to Vermont and starting my new job (in which I don't get much vacation time for my first year at work!).

     God Bless,

xoxo Annaliese (or Charlotte XO on the radio!)

4 Places To Visit In Rome From The Lizzie McGuire Movie!

I've always been more of a TV girl then a movie girl, but with that being said there are exactly five movies that I can binge watch over and over, share quotes from to no end, and all in all never get sick of watching. One of which I saw for the first time in a movie theatre with my parents back in 2003, and my life has never been same since that night. The movie of course is none other than The Lizzie McGuire Movie.

A Dream Fulfilled: Beginning My Radio Career.

No outfit post or Relationship Monday musings today.... due to the fact that this is a very exciting day, and one that I have waited a very long time for! Today is my first day of work as an on-air radio host, which has been a dream of mine since I was seven years old. It began to become a more realistic dream during my freshman year of college, and one that strongly influenced my move to North Carolina in the first place! Today, one year ago, I was celebrating at my last sorority formal. Had you told me that one year from then I would be preparing to start my first radio job in Vermont, there's no way I would have believed you!! (Probably least likely to believe the Vermont part- ha!)

When I announced the news last month on the blog about accepting the position for my first radio job, I touched over some of the basics regarding it, like where my job is located (VERMONT - hence my move across the East Coast!), the story of how I first became interested in radio as a little girl, and if my move would be bringing a name change or rebrand for my blog. Since sharing that initial announcement about my job, I've had several weeks to think about how I would like to continue to integrate my job into my blog's content. I happen to think that I am about to begin one of the coolest jobs in the world, and thankfully radio is an industry that is essential to integrate with social media, so I'll definitely be sharing about my job and transition into being in the radio world here on Southern Belle in Training. Post topics that I have ideas for include: picking an undergrad course of study and internships to prepare you for broadcasting, all about broadcasting school (what is it, who should go, what you study), why I picked radio over TV, a day in the life at work of a radio host, sharing my new music top picks each month, and also giving all of you a chance to ask me things in a Q&A post about my career and the radio industry, once I have gotten a bit more settled into my job! ALSO- Once my on-air schedule is set-in stone, I will be sharing it here so that any of you who would like to tune in can! (You can listen to both stations that I'll be working for online or on their iPhone apps!)

Although the last paragraph kind of captured what's to come as far as this life change and my blog, I do want to say again how big of a deal today is for me on a personal level. While this blog growing into what it is might be something that I never saw coming when I started it during my freshman year of college, I can't say the same for my career path! That IS what I've been working towards for so many years, and to watch my work and sacrifices pay off and my dreams come true in front of my eyes in unbelievable. I am both extremely nervous and extremely excited for today!

One last thing that I wanted to share with y'all... these two blog posts that really resonated with me a lot during the last couple months as I was preparing to move and start work. Krista from Covering the Bases and Jenna from Visions of Vogue are both fashion bloggers who could easily be blogging full-time at this point, but they love their day jobs and choose to continue their original careers as well as blog. Krista's post and Jenna's post, each about how much their careers mean to them, were such encouragements to me as I prepare to start mine! So many girls who do fashion blogging strive to be full-time bloggers, and while I admire those that do (some I'm even friends with!), that was never the path that I intended to take with this blog. My end-goal someday I suppose is to brand my radio presence and blog presence into one, if that makes sense, but still to always have my voice as an outlet.

For a non-radio update- this weekend I was able to solidify my editorial calendar for the rest of April, so expect some fun content here on the blog in the next couple weeks. Next week I'll also finally be beginning to recap my Italy trip- that is much delayed I know, but that's what happens when you travel internationally right before being in a wedding and moving! 😉

Thank you all for celebrating this new chapter with me!

     God Bless,

     xoxo Annaliese

BIG NEWS: I Have a Radio Job + I'm Moving!!!!

Photography by Deeana Kourtney Photography

It is my greatest honor to finally be able to share this joyful news with all of you! I feel like I have been sitting on the biggest secret for the past few weeks, but I wanted to make sure that everything was in place and 100% official before I announced it here. Today's blog post is a story of patience, determination, trusting in God's plan, and holding on to a very big dream, and I can't wait to share it all with you. I know that some of you are probably just reading to hear the nitty gritty details that this bold blog post title promised, so I'll get right to all of that first and foremost! And then if any of you want to stick around for a little more, the post will continue on below where I'm sharing the story of my first exposure to a radio station, and when I knew I wanted to be a radio personality when I grew up. But without further ado- let's jump in:

*Let's recap first- what have I have been up to for the past year? Following my graduation from college in May 2016, I enrolled in broadcasting school. My broadcasting school is a 10-month program where students are intensively trained for a career in radio, television or video/audio production. While I am glad that I was able to learn more about TV and production during this year,  it was very clear from me early on in my time there that radio was going to be my career path.
All students at my broadcasting school must complete an off-campus internship in their final months of schooling, and I began mine with a morning radio show here in Charlotte right after New Year's. Not even a couple weeks after starting my internship, I began applying to radio jobs across the country. For a number of reasons, as much as I love Charlotte as a city, I've been feeling like it's time to move away from here for a season of life. I also didn't know how long my job search would take, so that's why I wanted to begin early. And that's what lead to...

*My first radio job: I am so pleased to share that beginning on April 17th, I will begin my dream career! I will be working as an on-air radio personality for not one, but TWO stations! On weekdays, you'll be able to hear me on a Top 40 station, and on weekends I'll be on-air for an AC (adult contemporary) station. This couldn't be a more ideal first radio job for me, as one decision that I struggled to think about in broadcasting school is if I wanted to pursue Top 40 radio or AC. I love and listen to both formats, and genuinely didn't know for awhile which I would rather work in. Well- now I don't have to decide! One of my favorites sayings is "win-win," and in the case of my job I think this is the ultimate win-win! And note I said "you'll be able to hear me..." - both stations broadcast online and have listening apps as well, so you don't have to be in my new city to tune in! But that brings me to...

*Where I'm moving to: This wannabe Southern Belle is doing something she never thought she would do... moving OUT of the South and back to New England! If that doesn't prove how dedicated I am to my career and how much I love radio, I truly don't know what does. 😉 And no- I'm not moving home to Maine. I am actually moving to Burlington, Vermont! I have to stress- while I did want to leave Charlotte for the time being, at the same time I truly didn't see myself ever moving anywhere near New England again. But I also love everything about my new job, and in so many ways, this specific career opportunity is a God thing, and I know that Burlington is exactly where I'm supposed to be next. While I might not be excited for rough winters again, I am so excited for the adventures to come and discovering a new state and city!

*Is your blog name changing? This is the question everyone wants to know, haha! The answer is no, not at least for the first year I'm there. If Burlington and New England end up being a more permanent fit for me, or a place that I'm in longer than Charlotte, then you bet there will probably be a major blog rebranding in the the future! But at least not for the first year. Partly because I'm not sure if Vermont will be a season in my life or a permanent home, and partly because a blog rebranding and design is a big thing to undertake, not to mention expensive! Plus- "Southern Belle in Training" is a name that means a lot to me, and despite where I live, I will always be a Southern Belle in Training! I've fallen head over heels in love with Southern Culture, and I always hope to emulate characteristics of a modern Southern Belle, both on and off the air. 😊

I was flown up to Burlington for my final interview for this position a few weekends ago, which was when I took a random social media break for a few days if any of you remember! I wanted to be completely present and focused on what all was to come while I was there, which ended up being a great decision. And speaking of trips to Burlington, my mom and I are here again right now! I wasn't able to find an apartment during my interview trip, so we came back for a few days to tour a lot more places. It seemed appropriate to finally blog about the big news while I'm here!

Lastly, I wanted to share the story about how I became interested in radio as a young girl. While my mind did change a few times in middle school and high school about what I wanted to be when I grew up (other possible careers included journalist and teacher), I always would come back to radio personality. Anyways- here's the story:

My dad has a very deep and booming voice (I definitely get my loud voice from him!), and back in 2002, his company gave him the opportunity to record a radio spot for them at one of the local Maine radio stations. My dad would be spending the afternoon at the station recording the spot. Up until this point in time, I was quite the young radio enthusiast. By "radio enthusiast," I mean that I had a special radio ritual that took place most weekday afternoons. When I was six, my parents got me a pair of roller blades. As much as I enjoyed using them outdoors, I wanted to maximize my new toy to its full extent, so I used them indoors as well! Part of the basement in my house is unfinished, and most afternoons when I was six/seven years old, I used to head down to the unfinished part of the basement, but on my rollerblades, lift out my snazzy Philips boom box, unfold its radio antenna, and crank up the latest tunes on Maine's #1 leader for hit music, Q 97.9. And then I would skate laps around the basement, listening to my favorite radio hits and the afternoon DJ. (Mind you- the unfinished part of our basement was NOT large at all. They were very small laps. Haha!) Anyways, my afternoon basement roller skating radio fest kept me entertained for a long time, and when my dad had the opportunity for this commercial for his company, he asked if he could bring me along. The station said yes, and I was SO excited!

The day finally came to visit Q 97.9, and it was wonderful. My dad got to record the commercial, and while that was going on for him the afternoon DJ gave me a special tour of the station! A highlight of my tour was when I was shown where all of the new CDs were kept (does that prove how long ago this was?), and he told me I could pick one out to keep! If you're wondering what I chose, it was Enrique Inglesias's Escape, and I still have it to this day. (I'm also still an Enrique fan today! Ha.) They also told me I could pick out a song that would play later that hour, and I requested "One More Time" by Daft Punk. My dad and I later heard it as we were headed back home on the highway, and knowing that I had helped to pick that song gave me a feeling of happiness like I had never had before! Even at just seven years old, I knew in my heart that the feeling that I was experiencing right then as a consumer of radio, was what I wanted to give to people as my future career. I wanted to pick the songs and talk to the listeners (...or basement roller skaters, in my specific case). I wanted to have my voice be heard. I wanted to be a radio DJ! And here we are... about 15 years later, and the dream I never gave up on is finally coming true.

Thank you so much if you've made it to the end of this very long post! (And also a huge thank you to Deeana, my blog photographer, for the radio head shots! This photoshoot was definitely out of the norm for what we usually do, but still so fun!) A lot of changes will be coming in the next month in my life, but despite the huge move and new career, I hope to still keep things consistent here on Southern Belle in Training. I hope that y'all will be sticking by my side through what's to come, as I can't wait to bring my career and blog together!
